The SAAF ordered six English Electric Canberra B(I) 12s and three T 4s in 1962. Delivered to 12 Sqd during 1963 and 1964, they were extensively used in as tactical bombers and high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. 459 was delivered to the RAF as WJ617 20 January 1954, to the SAAF 16 April 1964. One B(I) 12 was shot down over Angola, five were sold to Peru along with one T 4. One T 4 went to the SAAF Museum whereas 459 became a gate guardian at AFB Waterkloof.
