The upper component of the Short-Mayo Composite, the S.20 is rarely treated in its own right and has even been confused with the S.22 Scion Senior. The sole S.20, Mercury first flew solo on 5 September 1937 and was launched by G-ADHK Maia for the first time on 20 January 1938. When taking off solo, its gross weight was 7031 kg (15,500 lb) but launch weight from Maia was up to 12,160 kg (26,800 lb), allowing a 9728 km (6045 miles) flight to South Africa. In 1940 the aircraft was assigned to the RAF's 320 (Dutch) Sqn, but it does not seem to have been used and was scrapped in 1941. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

American industrialist Powell Crosley Jr. was a prolific manufacturer in the first half of the 1900s. Producing Auto Parts, radios, household appliances, cars also included airplanes for a short time. The Crosley Moonbeam first flew December 8, 1929. Five variations were produced. The first was a three-place parasol; next, a four-place, high wing cabin model; third and fourth were one place high wings. Due to the Great Depression, planned production did not take place. This sole open cockpit bi-plane version is also the last Moonbeam in existence. The other four were lost in a hangar fire.

The Short Bomber had a production run of 83 aircraft for both the RFC and the RNAS. The tiny aircraft parked in front of 9340 is the Port Victoria P.V.8 N540, developed from the P.V.7. Both were intended as ship-launched fighters specifically to bring down Zeppelins. As the Zeppelin danger ended, so did the need for the P.V.8. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum publicly revealed their 72-foot wingspan reproduction of the 1914 Curtiss flying boat "America" at the Museum's annual seaplane fly in on Lake Keuka in Hammondsport, in New York's Finger Lakes region. The aircraft water taxied before the crowds in 2007 but did not fly because the two 100 hp special OXX6 engines sent out for overhaul were not ready. The replica flew for the first time at the 2008 fly in. The original America was built to compete for a $50,000 prize offered by the London Daily Mail for the first transatlantic crossing by a flying machine.

Long-range bomber prototype first flown on 2 May 1935. A second prototype, the DB-2A, and twelve DBA series aircraft were also built. In August 1937 this plane, captained by Sigizmund Levanevsky, departed Moscow for a flight to Fairbanks but went missing near the Alaskan coast. A major international search was fruitless. The reg is URSS-N209 with a Cyrillic N. URSS (French) and USSR (English) were used interchangeably on aircraft flying abroad, even though the regular Soviet CCCP prefix officially consisted of Roman letters. A metal twin-float monoplane airliner designed by Karl Theiss, the V.61 was identical to the V.59 except that the BMW IV engine was replaced by a Bristol Jupiter radial. The sole example, D-925 never really served with LFG's airline, Luftverkehr Pommern, as it was built for the 1926 Deutscher Seeflug competition in which it was wrecked on 28 July. It is seen wearing race number 3, presumably on the beach in Warnemünde. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

The Luftfahrzeug-Gesellschaft (LFG) V.130 was a landplane variant of the V.13 seaplane. Seven V.130s were operated by the manufacturer's Pomeranian airline, Luftverkehr Pommern. The company title and the Pomerian coat of arms, a griffin, appear to be on the passenger door while the larger text reads 'max. useful load 700 kg'. Photo from: SLUB / Deutsche Fotothek
