Hardly visible under the swarm of people, this is the world's oldest surviving Spitfire! Imagine it being treated like this today. Brought in for the display from 23MU Bicester. In 2021 it is proudly displayed at the RAF Museum, Cosford.

One of the aircraft assembled at Southend for the nascent BHAM. Eventually passed into the Historic Aircraft Museum (Southend) and then was to become G-JETH. The wings spar attachments were found to be cut through so FB.3 WM983 was acquired and became G-JETH instead. XE489 with the wings of WM983 (in themselves from WV909!) was sold in the Netherlands. The aircraft marked as "XE489" at Charlwood is G-JETH with the fuselage of WM983 and just the wings from the original XE489.

One of the 13 aircraft assembled on the eastern boundary at Southend for the nascent British Historic Aircraft Museum. Arrived by air from Shawbury on 14 March 1967. Sadly, this museum came to nought but was resurrected as the Historic Aircraft Museum (Southend) in 1972. By that time TX211/G-AVHU had been vandalised. It donated its outer wings, rudder, tailplane & port engine to VL348/G-AVVO in the summer of 1971 and was scrapped circa September 1972.

Acquired by Tippers Air Transport at Halfpenny Green from the RAF in October 1967 along with several others of the type. To the nascent British Historic Aircraft Museum at Southend in September 1968. The museum did not proceed and the aircraft languished at Southend, here seen without engines of outer wings. When the BHAM was resurrected as the Historic Aircraft Museum (Southend) G-AVVO was surplus to requirements and the fuselage was obtained by the Newark Air Museum as a replacement for that of G-ALIH which had been destroyed by fire in May 1971. On display at Newark as VL348 in 2021.
