Initially conceived as a two-seat training version of the F-100, to help reduce the retatively high rate of accident losses, the F-version in SE Asia proved ideally suited for new missions: surface to air missile (SAM) suppression ('Iron Hand') and high-speed forward air control ('Misty FAC'). This Hun was a Misty FAC aircraft assigned to the 37th TFW at Phu Cat AB, Vietnam and went on display at the National Museum of the USAF in 2003.

This is one of 45 examples of the MXY7-K1 Ohka glider completed and used to train pilots for kamikaze attacks with the Model 11 Ohka. This training version had to be re-used and so is equipped with a landing skid and flaps. It also carried water ballast, which was expelled before landing, in place of explosives and the rocket motor. This example is now on display within the WWII Gallery at the National Museum of the USAF.

This Mosquito is in reality RS709, a B.Mk. 35, but has been restored to a USAAF Mk. XVI configuration and given the fake aerial NS519, a weather reconnaissance aircraft of the 653rd BS based in England in 1944-1945. This Mosquito was also formerly G-ASKA, N9797 and G-MOSI.

To meet this need the RB-47H was developed (from the B-47E) and this example came the the National Museum of the USAF in 1998 and following extensive restoration went on display in 2003. She was originally delivered in 1955 and served with the 55th Strategic Reconnaisance Wing until 1966.

'Bockscar' on display at the National Museum of the USAF, was one of 15 specially modified "Silverplate" B-29s assigned to the 509th Composite Group. 'Bockscar' dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki on 9th Aug. 1945, three days after the atomic attack against Hiroshima.

'Bockscar' on display at the National Museum of the USAF, was one of 15 specially modified "Silverplate" B-29s assigned to the 509th Composite Group. 'Bockscar' dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki on 9th Aug. 1945, three days after the atomic attack against Hiroshima.

During WWII, the USAAF accepted 3,144 C-46s (1,410 were C-46Ds) for hauling cargo and personnel and for towing gliders. This P-47 is in reality 42-23278 and ex N347D but painted as 'Fiery Ginger IV' flown by the highest scoring P-47 Paciific theatre ace and Medal of Honor recipient, Col. Neel Kearby. On 5th March 1944, whilst on a mission to Wewak a Ki-43 'Oscar' fighter pilot shot down 'Fiery Ginger IV' and Col. Kearby was killed. After the war, the wreckage of the aircraft lay undisturbed and forgotten until the 1990s, when the tailfin was recovered to make a poignant addition to this display at the National Museum of the USAF.

This is one of 45 examples of the training MXY7-K1 Ohka glider completed. It is equipped with a landing skid and flaps so it could be re-used. It also carried water ballast, which was expelled before landing, in place of explosives and the rocket motor. Now on display at the National Museum of the USAF.
