Registration cancelled in 1932. Anderson Field was the first airport at Las Vegas. Known as Rockwell Field after a change of ownership. Airport closed by 1930. Western Air Express moved its services to what is now Nellis AFB but was then a private airport owned at one stage by the airline. Photo from: University of Nevada Las Vegas

Despite two prominent private customers, Harold Vanderbilt and speedboat magnate Garfield Wood, the six-passenger F-11 flying boat was not very successful. This airframe was tested by the US Army as the YC-16. Here it is seen wearing Western Air Express markings. WAE was affiliated with the American Fokker company and may have considered it for its seaplane service to Catalina Island, but WAE never operated the aircraft. Location thought to be the Teterboro factory airfield. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

The Rocky Mountains dwarfing the large Fokker F.32 during a 'New York to Hollywood' flight - Anthony Fokker made some fanfare around the delivery of two F.32s for WAE. A dance troupe was carried - NC333N wore different 'Fox-Fanchon & Marco Flying House Party' titles. These were the only two F.32 airframes to see airline service, and then only briefly. Not only did the Depression kick in, the type was badly underpowered even if the two pusher engines weren't overheating. Photo from: Pikes Peak Library District

On display at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, National Air and Space Museum. This aircraft was originally built as an M-4 but later reconfigured as an M-2. The type was extensively used by Western Air Express to carry mail over the Contract Air Mail Route 4 (CAM-4) between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. The M-2 could carry up to 1,000 pounds of mail in its forward compartment.

The crash of this F.10 airframe in Kansas one year later accelerated Anthony Fokker's downfall in the USA as one of the eight victims was celebrity football coach Knute Rockne. The Fokker's wooden wing presumably failed due to moisture damage. Western Air Express had by then become part of TWA. Probably as a result of the merger, the brand new airport built by WAE here at Alhambra, near LA, was abandoned. Photo by: G Haven Bishop / The Huntington Library
