A29-90 crashed near Mildura Victoria on April 1, 1944. Centre section turned up 1968. Thought to be A29-28. Real identity discovered after it was acquired by the RAAF Museum in 1996 to be rebuilt as a static exhibit. Intended to be finished for the RAAF's 100th anniversary in 2021, COVID delays meant it was not finally displayed until March 2025. Ming the Merciless is a character from the 1930s sci-fi adventure Flash Gordon.

It would have been a rare event for an RAAF Convair to cross the "ditch", as the Tasman Sea is known, to New Zealand. It is more than 2000km with only one island airport in between. Almost 20 years after this photo, an engine failure on an RAAF BAC 1-11 on a Tasman flight saw then prime minister Whitlam insist on four-engine VIP aircraft for all his international travel. The RAAF acquired a fleet of used 707s, some of which were also used as tankers. The RAAF VIP fleet in 2025 is all twins. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

The Marksmen was an aerobatic team that used the RR Avon-engined Sabre. A94-922 was retained by the RAAF in storage until 1994 when it was swapped for a collection of Douglas Boston components needed for a museum project. The Sabre changed hands a couple of times and was shipped to Ardmore, New Zealand, for restoration to airworthy. That work stopped in 2005 but it remained in excellent condition in 2017.

This lovely camouflaged Herk was accepted by the Royal Australian Air Force in August 1978. It flew with 36sq and was moved to 37sq (as pictured) when the RAAF C-17As became operational. The entire fleet of RAAF C-130Hs was retired by late November 2012. The withdrawn from use A97-006 was placed into storage at RAAF Richmond (Australia). The aircraft was sold to Indonesia as A-1330 and was delivered in November 2013. The RAAF Hercules' were often seen at Kandahar, flying logistic missions for the Australian military deployed to Afghanistan, as well as supporting their special ops.

Little is known about this Bf109 captured by the Australians. It was used by 3 Squadron as a hack, hence the serial HK849. This is not an official RAF or RAAF serial. There is a photo of the fuselage of this aircraft and another Bf109 fuselage on a large stack of scrap metal in Egypt They were trophies not worth saving as the war and 3 Squadron moved across the Mediterranean to Italy, Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

Built in Australia and taken on charge by the RAAF in April 1953. It seems to have spent its early life at 2 OCU before being converted to TT (Target Tow) standard in 1955. In September 1959 it was classed as surplus to requirements and transferred as Instructional Airframe No.6 to RSTT (RAAF School of Technical Training), Wagga Wagga. In May 1969 the aircraft was written off, pending disposal. It was acquired by the Corowa RSL and has been restored once since then.

This aircraft is painted as RAAF A24-30 but it is in fact a composite aircraft put together from hulks found at various farms in Australia. The fuselage is from RAAF A24-38 (cn 1097 - formerly an instructional airframe at Lake Boga), the cockpit section from Dutch Navy Catalina Y-72 or Y-76, and the wings are from an unidentified PBY-4.
