Ex Dutch East Indies air force. One of six taken on charge by the RAAF after being evacuated to Australia following the 1942 Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies. Used as transports between Australia and Papua New Guinea. They were difficult to maintain and unserviceable frequently. In 1944, the five survivors - one burned at its mooring because of an electrical fault - were flown to Lake Boga for storage. All were scrapped in 1945. The forward fuselage of an unknown one was saved when it became a houseboat. Photo from: State Library of Victoria

A4-28 was a pre-World War II delivery to the RAAF as a general reconnaissance aircraft. Soon after the war started, the RAAF replaced Ansons in this role with Lockheed Hudsons. A4-28 was transferred to training units where it was joined by the 1000 Ansons shipped to Australia as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme. It was scrapped after the war. A89-304 photographed exercising with the RNZAF off Fiji where the New Zealanders stationed Sunderland flying boats. The museum dates the photo as 1961 but it is known the the aircraft did not have a white top in September that year. It is recorded two RAAF P-2E transitted Fiji twice in August 1962 on a visit to the US and were hosted by the RNZAF. It is not known if A89-304 was one of them. A89-304 was scrapped at Bankstown airport in 1968. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

A29-90 crashed near Mildura Victoria on April 1, 1944. Centre section turned up 1968. Thought to be A29-28. Real identity discovered after it was acquired by the RAAF Museum in 1996 to be rebuilt as a static exhibit. Intended to be finished for the RAAF's 100th anniversary in 2021, COVID delays meant it was not finally displayed until March 2025. Ming the Merciless is a character from the 1930s sci-fi adventure Flash Gordon.
