The translucence of this suspended B.E.2c shows its fragility and strength as the spars and ribs contrast with the truss of Imperial War Museum London. It was probably built around 1916. By Feb. 1917 it was on the strength of No. 50 Home Defence Sqn., Royal Flying Corps at Dover to intercept Zeppelins. It went on to two Night Training Squadrons and to No. 51 Sqn. RAF in Norfolk. After a forced landing, the B.E.2c was withdrawn from use and transferred to the museum in Sept. 1919.

Photo may be taken at Suttons Farm where 2687 was sent in November 1915. Suttons Farm was one of the aerodromes built to defend London against Zeppelin raids. It closed after the war and returned to farming use. However it was soon acquired by the RAF to become Hornchurch aerodrome, one of the key bases during the Battle of Britain. What is known about this aircraft is that it served with the Royal Flying Corps before being transferred to 1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. The soldiers appear to a mix of Australian light horsemen and New Zealand mounted riflemen. 1 Squadron's role was to work closely with Australian and New Zealand mounted soldiers and this photo would appear to be from that period. This original BE2c was built in Lincoln (probably) in 1916 and went on to serve with No.50 Home Defence Squadron, RFC based at Dover. She later went on to serve with two Night Training Squadrons and No.51 Sqn. RAF before a bad landing forced retirement and she was acquired by the IWM in 1919.

Generally displayed at the Imperial War Museum in London this 1916 built aircraft was actually acquired by the Museum as long ago as 1919. It was moved to Duxford during refurbishment work on the building in London and is currently displayed at Duxford and looking magnificent

Part of the Musee de L'Air collection which was at Chalais Meudon. The aircraft, built in 1915, was in a marvellous unrestored condition. I am not certain if it carries British or French markings.
