In reality this is 43-31171 but is on display at the IWM Duxford to represent B-25J 43-4064 that served with the 488th BS, 340th BG, 12th Air Force in the latter stages of the Second World War from its base in Corsica. This was the BG that formed the inspiration for Joseph Heller's satirical novel Catch-22. Heller served as a bombardier in the 488th Bomb Squadron and had extensive experience flying bombing missions in Mitchells.

This Mossie was built towards the end of 1945 as a B.Mk.35, probably by Percival, but later converted by Brooklands to TT.35 configuration with a target-towing winch in the bomb-bay, and guards on the tail surfaces and tailwheel. In 1963 it was registered G-ASKC, repainted as HJ898 (coded HT-G) for use in the film "633 Squadron", which was mostly shot in Scotland, with the aircraft operating from Dalcross. It now hangs from the roof in AirSpace at IWM Duxford.

It wears an authentic Armée de l'Air standard three-tone scheme with GC 11/5 markings on the port side and Lafeyette Escadrille Sioux Indian head motif (the TFC logo) and code "8" on the starboard side. It has "81" under the port wing and "X8" under the starboard wing.

XH648 was originally built as a B1 and delivered to 57 Squadron at Honington in 1959. Shortly afterwards it went to HP at Radlett for conversion to B1A status, which involved fitting ECM equipment and new engines. In 1965 it was converted by HP into a two-point tanker, making it a B(K)1A, and so served in its final years as a fueller until retirement to Duxford in June 1976.

During its service life this Shackleton served with Nos. 201, 120 and 203 Squadrons based in Northern Ireland and Malta. It was flown to Duxford in 1972 but is currently stored in sections in the restoration hangar at the IWM. Hopefully, they will sometime find the time, space, money and resources to fully restore this beautiful aircraft to display standard.
