H5240 was supplied to New Zealand as part of the post World War I Imperial Gift to help set up an air arm. Instead, it passed to Walsh Bros, trading New Zealand Flying School. H5240 was registered G-NZAB in 1922 but never carried the civil registration. In 1924 the school and aircraft were taken over by the new New Zealand Permanent Air Force. H5240 crashed at Waihi on May 26 that year. Longlands was Hastings's first aerodrome on land leased by Walsh Bros. It was replaced by the current Bridge Pa aerodrome (NZHS) in 1934. Beaches were handy areas of flat firm ground at a time when aerodromes were scarce. Initially G-EAIY (registered August, 1919) and shipped to Australia for assembly by Australian Aircraft and Engineering Co. It became G-AUBE in June 1921 and struck off in June 1923. Returned as G-AUEO in October 1928 with a Sunbeam Dyak engine in place of the original Clerget. Crashed in February 1929 and struck off the register a year later. Repaired and flew again in January 1932 (crashed soon after) but not formally registered after March 1930. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

E3747 took part in the First Peace Loan to raise money to cover the cost of World War I. Showgrounds and racecourses provided suitable open space near towns at a time when only a few airstrips, military or civil, existed in Australia. E3747 was damaged at Gympie on September 17, 1919 and sent back to the Central Flying School at Point Cook for repairs. Struck off charge in April 1920. A replica of E3747 is displayed at the RAAF Museum. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

Built at Mascot, Sydney. Flown from a nearby cow paddock that is today's Sydney International Airport. G-AUDR registered in 1922, the year AAEC went bust. It had been formed three years earlier to make 504Ks. -UDR initially fitted with a Sunbeam Dyak engine but in the photo has a more powerful Curtiss K6. The distinctive 504 rudder has been replaced with a fin and rudder resembling that of an Avro Avian. Avro wrecked in a gale at Moora Valley c1926. Photo from: State Library of Queensland
