Little is known about this picture, so any help on years and / location is appreciated. 71-0291 has been a trails aircraft during its entire career. First with MacDonnel-Douglas for the F-15E development, later with Boeing for glass cockpit and various equipment tests. As such she was withdrawn in 1992. Considering the early 90s paint scheme this pictures probably dates from its final years in service. In 2002 the aircraft was sold to Saudi Arabia where it now resides in the Riyadh museum as Saudi Air Force '1315'. Photographer unknown

It seems that Hawthorne Nevada Airlines was only so named in 1968 and early 1969. Earlier it was Mineral County Airlines. Hawthorne is a small town but a casino on Walker Lake drew gamblers from California. N15570 fatally crashed into Mount Whitney on 18 February 1969. Our other photo of N33639 suggests the airline was renamed Air Nevada immediately thereafter. The DC-3A was originally NC28305 of Pan Am. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

N number 30000 has been worn by five different DC-3s. NC30000 was issued regularly in 1941 to a DC-3A (c/n 4809) which the Douglas company decided to keep as a demonstrator and executive transport. Douglas kept the mark and used it for the first remanufactured DC-3C (old c/n 13825, new c/n 43073) and then for the first Super DC-3 (c/n 6017/43158). When that one was sold, the reg of the plane in the photo, the second Super DC-3 (c/n 4122/ 43159) was changed from N15579 to N30000. Another Super DC-3, VC-117D BuNo 17175 (c/n 12779/43301) also wore N30000 in the 1990s. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

This is the Twin Mustang which amazingly flew 5000 miles non-stop from Hawaii to New York in February 1947. The P/F-82B was an early variant which was retired from USAF service in 1949. Given the markings and the snow, the photo seems to have been taken in late 1948 or 1949 at an airport with TWA service. 44-65168 was used by NACA in the 1950s, coded EFQ-168. Its last flight to the USAF Museum in Dayton was in summer, on 21 June 1957. Photo from: US Air Force

This aircraft was originally the sole DL-2, a Sirius with a metal fuselage built in Detroit. By April 1931 it was converted to DL-2A Altair with retractable gear, and delivered to the US Army as the Y1C-23, a fast VIP transport often flown by Ira Eaker. Initially it still wore civil reg NR8494. Here it is seen wearing Bolling Field insignia and simplified designation C-23 just behind the cowling, which should date the photo between 1933 and 1935. On some photos the Secretary of War's flag is painted on the other side. Following a gear-up landing it was rebuilt and repainted in light blue in 1935. Condemned to ground instructional airframe following another belly landing with jammed gear in April 1938. Photo from: US Air Force

G & A Aircraft designed the Model 45 series of rotor-craft for the U.S. Army who designated them XR-9, -9A & -9B. These were unsuccessful but the Firestone Rubber Company bought G & A in 1943 with the intention of producing a civil version. This resulted in the Firestone Aircraft Company Model 45D shown here. It was demonstrated at the 1946 Cleveland National Races but the hoped for orders did not materialize. Photo from: William Engle via Tim Martin
