Originally delivered to USN as PB2Y-3 BuNo. 7099, later converted to PB2Y-5R. Sold surplus in 1946 to Hughes Tool Co. and registered NR69003. In 1973 Hughes donated the Coronado to the museum. This slide shows the condition it was in when received. After a multi year restoration the PB2Y-5R is now on inside display in the WWII gallery.

The XC-99 was located just outside of Kelly AFB when this slide was taken. In 1973 it was owned by the San Antonio chapter of the Disabled American Veterans organization. It was open to the public at that time, with a nominal charge to go up inside it, which we did. At this point there were no longer any USAF markings on the aircraft.

This is F-102A 53-1799, the 9th F-102A built. It was never modified with the larger vertical fin as many other early F-102A a/c were. This a/c went on display in 1962. In 1978 it was moved back to Eglin AFB, just north of the city, for future display at the USAF Armament Museum at the base. Due to severe corrosion in the airframe it was sent to one of the target ranges on the base and was expended (destroyed) in the 1979-80 time frame.

Not a very clear slide, but it does show "Diamond Lil" in the configuration as acquired from PEMEX Oil Co. of Mexico in 1968. 1972 was the first year this paint scheme was used. N24927 had an interesting history, having been built as part of a B-24A order for the RAF. After a mishap while still in the U.S., the a/c became the prototype for the C-87 version of the Liberator. After the war N24927 went through several civilian operators before joining the CAF, and is still on flying status with them.

Slide taken when Chanute AFB was still active. This is actually GRB-58A 55-666 painted as B-58A 61-2059. This a/c was originally built as a YB-58A. Transferred to Chanute in May 1964 as a ground instructional airframe. Redesignated GRB-58A in May 1965. Put on display at the base in 1967. After the Chanute Air Museum closed in 2015, this a/c was moved in August 2017 to the Castle Air Museum in California.

While attending college the company I worked for owned this 180. I was able to log some time in it. It was hard to taxi as it had self castering crosswind wheel assemblies which occasionally both toed in at the same time. This photo was taken during a cross country flight from Baton Rouge, LA. to Cozumel, Mexico and back in the summer of 1969.
