Licence-built aircraft with over 40 of the Italian designed flying boats built in the US. NC14381 is sometimes designated the S.56C on account of its 100hp Kinner radial which was about 10% more powerful than the Kinner engine used in most American built aircraft. The sole Finnish Jungmeister. Before delivery to Finland it was displayed by Gerd Achgelis himself at Stockholm - Bromma on 10 and 11 September 1938. Apparently the Finnish Aero Club, Suomen Ilmailuklub, used it to prepare for the aerobatic event of the cancelled 1940 Olympic Games in Helsinki. It fatally crashed at Hamina in 1948, but was rebuilt, only to crash again at an airshow at Kauhajoki (EFKJ) in 1953. Photo by: Kai Mellén / Finnish Aviation Museum

Delivered new to E. W. Wiggins Airways of Massachusetts in October 1946 although the notes with the photo say it was owned by the State of Rhode Island. Maybe Wiggins had a contract with the state to provide a flying boat or it was being demonstrated in the hope of a sale. The number of Seabees in the background of other photos of NC87524 this day is a strong indication this is at the factory at Farmingdale. Remains of N87524 in a Florida scrap yard in 2004. NC600Y (N600Y) current in 2023. Pilot is Anthony "Andy" Stinis, the writing on the side says "Licensed by Skywriting Corp of America". Stinis was a skywriting pioneer and in 1932 became Pepsi-Cola's official skywriter. Later flew flying boats for Pan Am and the US Navy. Postwar helped develop "skytyping" where several aircraft write at the same time. Stinis was killed in 1992, aged 83, when he was struck by a car while crossing the road in Florida. This aircraft was originally ordered by Sweden as a Seversky EP-106 two-seat trainer, part of a 120-aircraft deal. Undelivered aircraft were requisitioned in October 1940 by the US government and handed to the USAAC. The EP-106 was the export version of the P-35 fighter and designated J9 in Sweden. The USAAC called the ex-Swedish single-seaters Republic P-35A and the two-seaters Republic AT-16. Seversky had changed its name to Republic in 1939. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

An early photo of Tempelhof. Paid for by Junkers and Deutscher Aero Lloyd, two hangars and a terminal building were erected from June 1923. The terminal is still incomplete here but the familiar radio masts are already standing. The Junkers Works Air Traffic Department was not an airline but a support organisation for the airlines affiliated with Junkers. The Junkers airline took off in August 1925. The Junkers A40 on the left, D-440, carried out a nocturnal Berlin - Stockholm mail flight in August 1924. The other aircraft are F13s, including D-290 and D-313. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

The preliminary Free City of Danzig registration FD-15 is blocked, but construction number 1504 is clearly readable on the front fuselage of this airliner of the Danziger Luftreederei. The front fuselage is painted yellow and black. It does not yet carry the silver crosses of Danzig (Gdansk) on the rudder. To Dz-4 in 1921. While the Fokker-Grulich F.II version was built by Deutsche Luft-Reederei, 1504 is a Fokker c/n. Presumably due to a miscommunication it was issued to an F.III too, H-NABH. The first of 205 NH-1 instrument trainers. These wore a green band around the rear fuselage. The US Navy appreciated the qualities of the Howard DGA-15 and some 275 utility transports designated GH were also acquired, adding to four impressed civil aircraft. The GH-2 model was an ambulance. It is not clear if the name Nightingale applied to the GH-2 or to the GH and NH overall, depending if it referred to Florence or the bird. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command
