Constructed as B-17G-85-DL 44-83514 by Douglas at Long Beach and assigned to the Pacific Theater of Operations, stored in Japan post-war. Redesignated as RB-17G in 1947 and signed for photo-mapping at Clark Field, Philippines. Transferred to Eglin AFB, FL in 1950 and converted to DB-17G for ASR operations. Converted again to DB-17P I 1951 for 3215th Drone Sqdn, Patrick AFB, FL. Converted to fire tanker late 1960, having become N9323Z. To Confederate Air Force 1977. Now flies as "Sentimental Journey" (sharing the same name as Pima's B-29) representing a B-17 of the 457th BG, RAF Glatton.

Heaven's Above is one of 31 aircraft on display all around the Lackland parade field. It is now falsely painted as 42-97328, while it is in fact ex 44-83512.

Painted to represent Flying Fortress of the 390th Bomb Group at Framlingham, Suffolk, England in 1943, this is really a B-17G-110-VE 44-85828 built by Lockheed-Vega at Burbank. In August 1945 it was transferred to the US Coast Guard at Elizabeth City, NJ as a PB-1G, serialled 77254. It flew its last mission in October 1959 and was sold in 1960 as N9323R, being converted to a sprayer in 1962. Further modifications came in the late 1960s when it became a firefighting tanker, ending up with Aero Specialities at Mesa, AZ. Transported to the Pima museum by road in December 1980.

Delivered as 44-83663 in 1945. To the Brazilian Air Force as 5400 in 1953. Donated to the USAF Museum as 44-83663 in 1968. To Yesterday's Air Force, Chino in 1973. Registered as N47780. Last flight to the Florida Military Aviation Museum in 1980. Dismantled and flown to Hill AFB, UT in a C-5 in 1986. Displayed at the Hill Aerospace Museum as 44-83663. .

Sally B is now a common sight on the European airshow circuit. Between 1982 and 1984 she carried these markings before being painted olive drab. I think she looked all the better for it though it is probably better protected against the weather now.

On display at Musée de l'Air at Le Bourget. This is ex-USAAF 44-8889 that was built as a B-17G at Lockheed Vega, Burbank and assigned to the 8th AF but kept in storage. In 1949 it was assigned to 7499 Air Force Composite Squadron (AFCS) in Germany as an RB-17G for photo-ELINT, which flew peripheral recce missions to detect Soviet radar. The aircraft was sold in 1954 to Institut Géographique National (IGN), modified for aerial mapping and operated out of Creil. It was retired to the museum in 1976.

Ex USAAF 44-83563. One of three B-17s which passed through Gatwick en-route to Bovingdon for the filming of the movie The War Lover. Once at Bovingdon all three were painted in the USAAF camouflage of the 324th Bomb Squadron of the 91st Bomb Group, N9563Z wearing the serial 41-27742/DF-T. After filming she returned to the US to join Aviation Specialties of Mesa as a fire tanker and in 1969 was involved in the film Tora Tora Tora. Sold to the National Warplane Museum at Geneseo NY. in 1985 flying as '297400' 'Fuddy Duddy' and current with the Lyon Air Museum in Santa Ana CA. at time of upload.

These are parts of Boeing B-17G 42-38160 "Lonesome Polecat" of 550th sq, 385th BG of the USAAF 8th Air Force. This unit was stationed at Great Ashfield airbase, UK. The Flying Fortress ditched in Lake Zug, Switzerland after it had been hit by German fighters on 16 March 1944. The wreckage was raised from the lake in August 1952. It was initially displayed in St. Moritz, but scrapped in 1972/1973. Dutchman mr. Dam managed to acquire some parts which he later donated to CRASH.

This aircraft has had several different paint schemes since it has been at the museum. This appears to be the only one that has the original USAAF serial number on it.

The Memphis Belle was on display on Mud Island in the Mississippi River in an open air pavilion with a tarp cover from 1987 through 2003. Due to exposure to the elements it was transferred to the USAF Museum in 2004 for restoration. Completed in 2018, the aircraft is now on display in the World War II Wing of the museum.
