This beautifully presented DC-2 has a rich history, going back to 1935 when delivered to KLM as PH-AKH. It was acquired by the Finnish AF in 1940 via Sweden under registration SE-AKE and served in the Winter War, initially performing bombing and later VIP transport duties. When retired by the Air Force in 1955 it was converted as a café in Hämeenlinna, until saved by the Finnish Air Force Museum in 1981. After restoration between 2009 and 2011 in the colours worn during the later war period, it was placed on display in its own building at Tuulos Shopping Centre in 2015.

Withdrawn from use in 1940. This aircraft was known as Quantico 1. It is believed to have been based at Turner Field because it had been built to accommodate larger higher performance aircraft than the original Quantico airstrip known as Brown Field. The R2D would have been the largest aircraft in use by the USMC when they were delivered. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

The B in BNA is for Berry Field. The airport was built in 1936 for the 105th Observation Squadron as well as commercial use. The source gives 3 May 1940 as the photo date but the early B-17s on the left suggest that this may be the airport's June 1937 opening instead. Built in 1934, the DC-2 was sold to the Royal Air Force in late 1940 as DG470. The reg was reused by two DC-3s, c/n 6313 and c/n 19667. Photo from: Tennessee State Library and Archives

The famous Uiver was the very first DC to be exported. It was shipped from New York to Rotterdam where it was offloaded at Waalhaven airport for reassembly. After some searching for a bird name starting with U it was christened on 28 September. After its participation in the MacRobertson Air Race in October it crashed in Iraq on 20 December, just as the Fokker F.XVIII PH-AIS Snip, in the background, was crossing the Atlantic on its flight to the Dutch West Indies. The Fokker F.VIII with wing-mounted engines is PH-AEH, later PH-OTO. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

A30-14 being dismantled after a landing accident. It was trucked to Cairns then shipped to Melbourne for repairs. In 1947 it was sold to Marshall Airways for use as spares for its DC-2 VH-CDZ. A30-14 remained stored in Sid Marshall's yard until after his death in the 1970s. Sold to the Dutch Dakota Association in 1987 and shipped to the Netherlands. Now displayed as PH-AFK at the Nederlands Transport Museum. Photo from: National Library of Australia

A French DC-2, apparently in Amsterdam. Fokker 'line number' 11. Renault planned a DC-2 version with its engines but after testing of this state-owned aircraft, CEMA more or less rejected the DC-2 as unstable - not without justification. Aircraft probably ended up in Spain. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Danish geographer Sophie Petersen (1885-1965) was known as 'the most travelled woman in Denmark, if not the world.' For her 1935 trip she flew from Germany to Brazil on Graf Zeppelin and also passed through Santiago's Los Cerrillos airport. NC14272 crashed into Mount Mercedario in 1938 on a cargo flight. 'Unloading of airmail' - this may have been staged. The source is confused about the date but the photo may have been taken when Canadian Colonial Airways bought this DC-2 as CF-BPP in 1939. NC13731 flew in spares - probably a propeller - for the transatlantic Vultee V-1 NR13770 Lady Peace which, flown by EAL chief pilot Dick Merrill, had landed in a bog at Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland. EAL boss and WWI ace Eddie Rickenbacker was on board the DC-2, but it was piloted by George Branson and Joe Kelly. Several planes carrying journalists also arrived. Photo from: Conception Bay Museum

What makes this photo unusual is the Australian National Airways logo. UYB was owned by ANA but the ANA logo on the fin has been changed to AOA aka Airlines of Australia. ANA owned AOA which continued to operate as a separate airline until 1942 on services north of Brisbane. Ross Plains airport was opened in 1930. Postwar the RAAF aerodrome at Garbutt became Townsville's civil airport. Photo from: Townsville City Library
