The first Pika where it came down in a forced landing caused by compressor stall. The pilot was badly injured in the accident and the aircraft written off. It had completed 44 test flights. The rest of the flight test program for the Jindivik pilotless drone was completed by C-2.

This was the first two Pikas that were manned aerodynamic test aircraft for the Jindivik drone. C-1, which was also A93-1, was written off on April 5, 1951 in forced landing due to compressor stall. A second Pika, C-2/A93-2, is preserved at the RAAF Museum. The Pika used small side engine intakes with the pilot sitting in what would be the intake area of the drone.

The occasion is the reopening of the airport on Catalina Island after the runway was rebuilt as a US Marines training exercise. N64784 had in the past been the corporate aircraft of the Wrigley family which once owned the island. Fully restored and again owned by a member of the Wrigley family, N64784 was the first aircraft to land on the repaired runway. The island is now held a trust. VH-AXR had its registration changed in May 1949 to VH-BXR. Registrations in the AX block were barred by the Department of Civil Aviation because of possible confusion with other uses of a radio callsign prefix allocated to Australia. The block remains barred in 2023. Photo from the John Hopton Collection

This aircraft is also listed as c/n DHA127, which was A17-130 and formerly VH-BCW. The fuselage of BCW was used in a rebuild of VH-AZT in the 1950s but the aircraft retained the registration and c/n of AZT. Not an uncommon practice in rebuilds. The aircraft underwent a further rebuild between 1970 and 1982 and returned to the register with the c/n A17-130. The c/n used here is that of VH-AZT when first registered in in 1946.
