The first production Hercules to be built, following two YC-130 prototypes, made its maiden flight on 7th April 1955 as a C-130A with the original blunt nose. The left wing burned off on the ground after a fuel leak on her third flight, but repaired. Converted to AC-130A gunship in December 1968, serving with a number of units in Vietnam (hit by a 37mm shell in 1971). Seen here in service with the 711th SOS; after withdrawal from duty in 1995, placed on permanent display at the USAF Armament Museum, Eglin AFB in 1996

Looking immaculate on the HAECO ramp, this Herk of the RMAF's 14 Sqdn was first received in 10.76. Still with them and much more recently converted to stretched C-130H-30 standard in Malaysia, now flying in the inevitable grey colours

This veteran Herk was delivered to the USAF in 7.57 and passed to the Fuerza Aerea Boliviana in 10.88, the oldest of 16 used by that country. Note in this shot the US serial 41636 is still carried (an FY-54 allocation, of course, so made some 55 years ago). Wfu 7.96 and remained stored at LPB with fading marks
