Subject of an accident report as recently as 22 June 2018: the aircraft sustained substantial damage due to a lose of directional control while landing in gusty tailwind conditions on a remote river NW of Dillingham, AK, impacting the bank and striking trees.

Built for the US Army in 1957 as 56-4427. Transferred to US Forest Service in 1974. Specially equipped as a fire bomber, with a tank which can be seen between the float struts. Docked at its home at Shagawa Lake, the US Forest Service's only seaplane base. From here it operates on a range of support duties across Superior National Forest, attacking wildfires during the fire season. Registration change to N193Z was applied later in 2003.

Southern Seaplane has a seaplane facility and small airstrip beside a canal south of New Orleans near Belle Chase. In 1985, their business was primarily flying workers to offshore oil and gas production facilities in the Mississippi Delta not served by helicopters. The fleet was mostly Cessna 185s. The company acquired this DHC-2 Beaver, N53LP, from Dominion Air Lease Ltd. of Toronto in August 1984 (ex-C-GTER) and flew it until March 1990 when it was sold to Lake Union Air Service in Seattle and N91LU. On the date of the photo, the company was also overhauling two Grumman G-44 Widgeons.
