Seating up to 20 passengers the F.IX was Fokker's largest trimotor airliner. There was little wrong with the design but its appearance coincided with the Great Depression and only two examples were built for KLM. The Avia company in Czechoslovakia built the type under licence as an airliner and bomber. Photo from: Haags Gemeentearchief

The Moth used by Maude "Lores" Bonney for several epic flights including the first woman to fly solo from Australia to the UK, which she did in 1933. After Bonney replaced the aircraft with a Klemm, the Moth passed through a couple of owners until impressed by the RAAF in 1940 as A7-81. It was sold to an aero club after World War II, presumably as spare parts because it did not return to the register. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

The second of the two Junkers G38s, photographed in flight near Dresden. The largest landplane in the world for some time, the G38 must have provided a fantastic view for the lucky passengers seated in the blended wing. D-2500, later D-APIS, entered Lufthansa service on 1 July 1932. It was eventually used by the Luftwaffe as a transport and destroyed in an air raid in Athens on 17 May 1941. Flown to Australia and on to Japan by Francesco de Pinedo, with his mechanic, Ernesto Campanelli, then back to Italy between April 21 and November 7, 1925. De Pinedo made several other major long-distance flights over the next eight years. He was killed on September 2, 1933 when his Bellanca crashed on take-off at New York while attempting a non-stop flight to Baghdad. The airliners are DH.89 Dragon Rapide SU-ABQ, HP.42 G-AAUE, AW.15 Atalanta G-ABTJ and VQ-PAF, a Fokker F.XVIII, ex PH-AIQ and OK-AIQ. The old Fokker was to be used by Hevra Avirit (Commercial Aviation Company) to transport fish from Aqaba, but written of on 13 January 1939, before the photo date, after a bad landing following a display flight. Hamilton Reach was Brisbane's water airport until replaced by one at Redland Bay that could better handle Sandringhams. Barrier Reef Airways base was on the southern side of the Brisbane River at Colmsie. VH-BRA was withdrawn from use at Colmsie in Oct 1951 and scrapped a few years later. VQ-P is for Mandatory Palestine. Photo taken at Lydda airfield, today Ben Gurion Airport. The airport opened in 1936 but was 'still anything but complete' in early 1938. Indeed the photo is probably from 1937 or 1938 as VQ-PAB was not registered until March 1937. Photo from: Library of Congress
