The last month of peace. Photo almost certainly taken on 2 August 1939 when Lufthansa introduced the Ju 90 on the Berlin - Amsterdam - London route, and some Dutch journalists were given a ride from Schiphol to Croydon and back. On 10 August Mecklenburg violated British airspace restrictions and overflew RAF Manston. By the end of the month regular Lufthansa flights to London had ceased. The second Junkers F13, first flown in July 1919. To Bayerische Luft-Lloyd as D-183, named Herta. Confiscated by Allies but returned. Operated by Junkers, Bayerische Luft-Lloyd and Lufthansa as D-1, named Nachtigall. Upgraded to F13bi in 1930. New registration D-OJOP assigned in 1934 but never applied. To Hansa Flugdienst subsidiary in 1938 for sightseeing and charter work as 'world's oldest airliner'. Commandeered for Luftwaffe Fliegerschule A/B 1 at Görlitz in June 1940 but damaged in November. Retired to Berlin aviation museum. Evacuated into countryside but lost. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

This photo was probably taken on 2 August 1939, the day the Ju 90 entered service on the Berlin - Amsterdam - London route. By the end of the month regular Lufthansa flights to London had ceased. If the big Ju 90 continued on the Amsterdam service at all, the photo cannot have been taken much later as the departing Fokker C.X does not wear the wartime orange triangle insignia. The following winter D-ASND was commandeered as BG-GX. Later coded J4-HH, it was destroyed in 1943. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Mt Hermon looms in the background on a clear day. From 1931 Imperial Airways flying boats alighted on the Sea of Galilee at Tiberias, initially connecting with a landplane at the nearby Samak airfield. With the introduction of the S.23 the flying boats flew all the way between Southampton and Singapore. This aircraft, Challenger, also carried out the first through service to Sydney in July 1937. It crashed off Lumbo in Mozambique on 1 May 1939. Photo from: Library of Congress

With the introduction of the DC-2, KLM transferred two F.XVIII (F.18) aircraft to its West Indies Branch, PH-AIS Snip making a transatlantic flight and PH-AIO Oehoe being shipped. They became PJ-AIS and PJ-AIO and the latter was renamed Oriol. Between June 1940 and early 1942 Oriol was used for patrol flights against the German submarine threat. Unfortunately both F.XVIIIs were scrapped after their retirement from KLM duty in 1946, although Snip's nose survives in a Curaçao museum. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

New eight-passenger airliner on the Paris - Amsterdam line. The F.300 prototype first flew in early 1930 and this is the first of six F.301s with Salmson 9 engines. Haltons were a dozen Halifax C.8 transport aircraft, converted to interim airliners for BOAC. The first was G-AHDU, ex PP310, christened Falkirk at Radlett on 18 July 1946. Later they were operated on the Berlin Airlift by Bond Air Services, transporting mostly fuel oil in their ventral cargo panniers. G-AHDU scrapped at Southend during 1950. Demonstration of Flygindustri (Junkers) seaplanes for the Netherlands navy. S-505 was a K30, a variant of the G24 airliner. S-AABB would crash into the seaplane station due to wing failure, damaging the Van Berkel W-A W54. The Flygindustri pilot, Lindner, was injured. Durgerdam village is in the background.
