In May 1937 Dick Merrill and Jack Lambie made a fast transatlantic return trip in this long-range L-10E Electra, to get high-quality photographs of King George VI's coronation to the USA as quickly as possible. This photo was taken a few days later. The first owner of this L-10 was Harold Vanderbilt. It later became USSR-N214. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Vikings G-AJDI and G-AJBY, Viscounts G-AMNI and G-AMOF, and an Airspeed Ambassador. Previously Volatile and Vitality, these Vikings were renamed Lord Keith and Lord Torrington in the 'Admiral Class', although it says 'Viking Class' on Lord Keith's nose here. The rather pompous BEA aircraft names were prefixed by 'RMA', for 'Royal Mail Aeroplane'. Photo from: Arkivverket (Norway)

One of those inevitable 'big and small' pictures with a Junkers G38, probably taken at Dessau. This A50 is interesting enough in its own right - wearing a Japanese rising sun, it was flown from Berlin to Tokyo by Seiji Yoshihara from 20-29 August 1930. It became J-BECB in Japan. Yoshihara then unsuccessfully ventured to cross the Pacific in a floatplane Junior, J-BENB, and in a Saro Cutty Sark, G-ABVF. Photo from: Finnish Aviation Museum

This Waco arrived with F19, the Swedish volunteer squadron in Finland during the Winter War, on this day. The photo is assumed taken at the unit's main base which was on Ajos Island, with the runways on the frozen sea arm. Formerly a DQC-6, NC16515. To Sweden late in 1938 as SE-AHM, owner Kurt Björkvall naming it Imbrim after the trawler which rescued him when he ditched in the Atlantic in Bellanca SE-AFG. After the Winter War the Waco formally joined the Swedish air force as a Tp8A, s/n 914, wearing SE-AHM in 1944 pictures. Ditched into the Baltic on 8 August 1948 and sank. 'Unloading of airmail' - this may have been staged. The source is confused about the date but the photo may have been taken when Canadian Colonial Airways bought this DC-2 as CF-BPP in 1939. Another frame shows a RCMP DH.90 Dragon, CF-MPB, dating the scene after May 1937. Photo from: Post Office Department / Library and Archives Canada

NC13731 flew in spares - probably a propeller - for the transatlantic Vultee V-1 NR13770 Lady Peace which, flown by EAL chief pilot Dick Merrill, had landed in a bog at Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland. EAL boss and WWI ace Eddie Rickenbacker was on board the DC-2, but it was piloted by George Branson and Joe Kelly. Several planes carrying journalists also arrived. Photo from: Conception Bay Museum
