Neutrality markings applied on PH-ALO and PH-ARE Emoe. The third DC-3 is probably PH-ALR Reiger. These three were ferried to Naples, the new European terminus of KLM's East Indies route, on 31 October 1939, getting there via Copenhagen and eastern Germany. They joined six other DC-3s on the Indies route which never returned to Amsterdam after the outbreak of WWII on 3 September. These aircraft were put on the NEI register in June 1940. PH-ALO to PK-ALO, destroyed at Broome by Japanese aircraft on 3 March 1942. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

G-AFTH during basic trainer trials soon after the A&AEE had moved from Martlesham Heath. The DH-94 was not adopted by the RAF. Instead the jigs and tools and all unfinished airframes and components were shipped to Australia where production continued. About 40 aircraft came off the Australian line but only four of them were entirely Australian. The RAAF, in common with the RAF, preferred the DH82 Tiger Moth and its DH-94s were mainly used as squadron hacks. G-AFTH meanwhile was impressed into the RAF as HM585 and did not survive the war. Delivered to Penn Central on 24 October 1939. Wears "The Capital Fleet" titling beneath its cockpit windows - and the firm formally changed its name to Capital Airlines in April 1948 to match its main base at Washington's DCA airport. From Douglas 60 years ago.
