A P-80A Shooting Star firing up. The other P-80A, 44-85412, crashed at Selfridge Field on 14 October 1947 whilst serving with 61 FS / 56 FG. Since this is a Detroit news photo, it was almost certainly taken there. 56 FG received the P-80A that year. Photo from: Wayne State University

Kanton (or Canton) Island was a refuelling stop on the long leg between Hawaii and ports such Fiji and American Samoa. That ceased in November 1965 when Pan Am withdrew DC-7Cs from the New Zealand route. The airport continued to be used by the US military and space agency as a space program tracking base until 1976. The airport remains as an emergency landing ground only. Kanton Island has a population of about 20 people. Photo from: Whites Aviation Collection/Alexander Turnbull Library

Aptly nicknamed Knuckleduster, the all-metal Short S.18 or R.24/31 unsuccessfully competed with the conventional Saro London and Supermarine Stranraer biplane flying boats, and only this prototype was built. It suffered from unreliable Goshawk steam-cooled engines but was a step towards the Short Empire and Sunderland. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

D3139 at the end of a flight from Invercargill at the southern tip of New Zealand to Auckland via Timaru and Wellington. With no landing ground in the city, the plane alighted in parkland at One Tree Hill. D3139 was part of the post-World War I Imperial Gift. NZ had no air arm so it became G-NZAM in 1922 and was operated by a civilian firm until 1923 when an air force was established. Photo from: Whites Aviation Collection/Alexander Turnbull Library
