A luxurious executive aircraft used by Richfield Oil president James Talbot, who invested in Atlantic Fokker and Western Air Express - a photo exists with Talbot, Anthony Fokker and his wife in the midnight blue cabin which was elaborately decorated with a zodiac theme. NC5614 delivered in June 1928. Taken in San Diego, the photo is dated 1930 by the source but aircraft was sold already in January 1929 to Northern Air Lines of Minneapolis, and soon operated by Universal Air Lines with 'Sky Diner' titles. Destroyed in a hangar fire at Chicago on 25 June 1930. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

The personal aircraft of the then Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII. He disposed of it in 1931. G-ABBS was sold to the British High Commissioner to Iraq and would remain in the region for the rest of its existence. Initially it remained G-ABBS with British owners in Iraq and Iran until it was sold in Iraq as YI-ABB in May 1935. It remained Iraqi registered until it ended up as a wingless instructional airframe in Beirut. Photo from: The Early Aviation Photograph Collection/The Museum of Flight

In the era of this photo, the USAAC serial was on a small stencilled panel on the port side of the fuselage near the cockpit. There were only four YIO-31As built. The California National Guard air wing was based at Griffith Park airfield in the 1930s. It closed in 1939. Photo from: The Early Aviation Photograph Collection/The Museum of Flight

NACA altered this Fairchild 22 almost beyond recognition making it a low-wing plane! Some sources suggest that NACA had three or four F-22s, but photos prove that NACA 60 was tested in different configurations. However, a different airframe was procured through the US Navy in 1935, becoming NACA 82. That one had a Warner Scarab radial engine, USN designation XR2K-1 (not XR2L-1) and BuNo 9998. Crashed near Port Mollar, Alaska, on April 30, 1924. This was the lead aircraft in the four-aircraft attempt to circumnavigate the world. The other three pressed on until Boston, under tow, sunk near the Faroes . The remaining two, Chicago and New Orleans, succeeded in completing the epic flight.
