NZ2411 was delivered to the RNZAF in August 1945. It was assembled but with the end of World War II not needed. In early 1946 the aircraft was encased in a rubberised cocoon where it remain until 1952. To give the reservist Territory Air Force a combat capability, NZ2411 and other stored P-51s were removed from their cocoons and handed to TAF squadrons. On December 22, 1953, NZ2411 crashed at Tongaporutu i on a flight from Ohakea to Whenuapai after the pilot became disorientated in cloud and lost control. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

NZ4013 sunk while under tow after it water-looped taking off from the Segond Channel during a rescue mission on October 11, 1944. The museum says the location of this photo is Emirau Island but there is no specific reference to a flying boat base there. The full photo does show a slipway. There was an airfield complex on the island that was used by the RNZAF. The island was captured from the Japanese in March 1944. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

When it attented WOW 2006 (where it flew a memorable display by the way), NZ7002 had already turned forty years of service with the RNZAF. Almost twenty more would follow, as it was not decommissionned before February 2025, after having clocked over 32000 flying hours!

Undated photo of a mishap involving NZ103. It was written off in a forced landing near Christchurch on February 6, 1940. The location of the photo is given as Taupo. The present Taupo airport opened in 1965. Tauhara aerodrome had been Taupo's airport until then. Part of it remained in use at the time of upload for the Taupo Gliding Club. Most of the old Tauhara aerodrome has been redeveloped for horse and motor racing. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

The fuselage of this aircraft was built in the UK and the rest in New Zealand. Separate c/ns were issued. RNZAF code numbers were not tied to the aircraft serial but to the unit, in this case the 3EFTS. The code was worn on the cowling and under the wings. The serial was on the rear fuselage. NZ756 was sold postwar as ZK-ASN. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
