This Zero was built in 1942 and operated from the airstrip on the infamous Pacific island of Ballale (now part of the Solomon Islands). After the island was abandoned by the Japanese this and a few other aircraft were left behind and gradually overtaken by the jungle. The wrecks were recovered in 1968 and this Zero was restored (using parts of other Zeros) and is now on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum.

This Suisei (Comet - Allied reporting name 'Judy') was recovered engineless from Babo Airfield, Indonesia in 1991 and has been restored/rebuilt by the Planes of Fame Museum to a non-flying, ground-running, display condition. A non-original radial engine has been installed so as a result the cowling profile is not quite accurate. More than 2000 'Judy's were produced and only this example and one original in Japan have survived.

No Seiran (Clear sky Storm) ever saw combat but was intended to fulfill the requirement for a bomber that could operate from a submarine to strike directly at the US and strategic targets such as the Panama Canal. This is the last built as well as the only surviving airframe and is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Ohka 11 was required to be launched within 37 km (23 mi) of the target, making them very vulnerable to defending fighters. The Model 22 was designed to overcome the short standoff distance problem by using a thermojet engine, the Tsu-11. This engine was successfully tested and 50 Ohka 22s were built but never used operationally. This is the only surviving example (marked '59' aft of the blossom) and is on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

Now on display at the National Naval Aviation Museum this combat veteran George (evidenced by a bullet hole in the starboard wing) was delivered in early 1945 and tasked with defending the areas around Hiroshima. It is the most complete and authentic example of the type extant of over 400 produced during WWII.

This Zero was built in 1942 and operated from Buna airfield, PNG by the Tainan Kokutai. The right wing was torn off during a bad landing and so the remaning airframe was abandoned. After the war the hulk was shipped to Brisbane and the rear fuselage used to build a composite Zero for testing. Somehow the rear fuselage has survived and is now on display at the Planes of Fame museum.

This aircraft is a long-term restoration project for the Imperial War Museum and is totally original. It was recovered from Taroa in the Marshall Islands in 1991 having been ditched and recovered. It had been a part of the 252nd Japanese Naval Air Group that had been based there in 1942 and 1943, Though badly corroded and with its engine missing it seems somehow poignant in that state

One of several unique types seen only in Japan is the P-1, designed to supersede the JMSDF's Orions. First flown in 2007, initial deliveries took place in 2013 and as many as 70 may eventually be acquired. In early January 2015, it was even offered as a potential replacement for the UK's axed Nimrods

Designed with folding wings and tail surfaces to be catapulted from submarines and used to attack the USA mainland, the first mission with Seirans on board was at sea when Japan surrendered. To shorten the launching process, they were to be catapulted from a cold start by heating the engine oil to 60°C in a separate chamber and pumping it through the engine just before launch, along with hot water. This is the only survivor of 28 built

Four "Emily" flying-boats of the 167 built for the Imperial Japanese Navy for maritime patrol, reconnaissance, bombing, and transport duities survived until the end of WWII. This one was captured by US forces in 1945 and was evaluated at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, MD in 1946/47, eventually being returned to Japan in 1979. It was on display at Tokyo's Museum of Maritime Science until 2004, when it was moved to Kanoya. A very special exhibit indeed!

A total of 20 US-1 and US-1A rescue amphibians were gradually delivered to the JMSDF over some 30 years from 1975 to 2005; just two (9089 & 9090) remain in service.
