Built in 1919 and registered as NC853. When the museum received the aircraft, the only existing piece was the fuselage. Volunteers were able to restore it and build new wings, etc. to produce this beautiful display. The Curtiss Museum also has an extensive collection of motorcycles and automobiles just a few of which are visible in the photo.

This replica was built in 1998 by the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, NY. It was flown in 1999 and again in 2013 from Lake Keuka, which abuts Hammondsport. The original Curtiss Model E Flying Boat was the first practical flying boat and was built for civilian use as well as for the US Navy.

Fourteen Kingbird D-2s were built, two of which were exported to Turkey to provide the first air link between Ankara and Istanbul, via Eskişehir. NC601V (c/n 2007) became T.H.P.207 with Türk Hava Postalari in February 1933. Later that year it was transferred to Devlet Hava Yollari (DHY), predecessor of THY, as TC-KUŞ (with cedilla), fleet number 2. Here it is being inspected in Ankara by Atatürk, presumably at Güvercinlik. The other Kingbird, NC602V (c/n 2008), became T.H.P.208, then TC-102C with DHY (fleet number 1). It reportedly carried the name Kelebek (butterfly).

This is a replica of the Curtiss June Bug built by the Mercury Aircraft Co. of Hammondsport, NY in 1976. It flew multiple times, and still has a current FAA registration. On loan to the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. The original June Bug flew in 1908, and was the first a/c with ailerons and tricycle landing gear. The first aeronautical prize, the Scientific American Cup, was won by the June Bug on 4 July 1908. The cup (and $25,000!) was awarded for accomplishing the first public flight over 1 kilometre (.61 mi.)

The lowest power category in the 1925 German Round Flight for light aircraft was up to 40 hp. Hans Klemm thought this disadvantaged his Daimler L20, which had a 20-hp Mercedes F7502 engine, and improvised the L21 with two of these. Two L21s were built, D-623 flown by Bruno Loerzer winning the rally, and D-622, flown by Friedrich Siebel during the event. The photo was probably taken in 1925. The L21 was not pursued further since it could not maintain altitude on one engine. Klemm started his own company in 1927, and his partner Siebel did the same in 1937. Location not known - perhaps Daimler airfield at Sindelfingen. Photo from: Daimler

Powered by an engine of only 20 hp, the Daimler L20 did well in the 1925 German Round Flight, crossed the Alps in winter in February 1926 and is seen here making an appearance at an airshow in Malmö. Designer Hans Klemm could still not persuade Daimler to undertake series production, and did it under his own name in 1927. Construction number is unconfirmed. Photo by: Hans Ryberg / Flygvapenmuseum

The Austrian Phönix D.III fighter and Phönix C.I scout were purchased by Sweden following demonstrations in Stockholm in 1919. The C.I was manufactured at the air force workshops as the E1/E2 'escort fighter', gaining the telling nickname Dront (dodo). The designations were changed to Ö4 (advanced trainer) and A1 (attack aircraft) in 1926. This airframe, originally delivered with serial 626, was not retired until 1935. After several changes, it then wore serial 693 with a prefix for F1 wing at Västerås - Hässlö. Photo from: Flygvapenmuseum

Located in an unlit area of the exhibit hall, it took a 3-minute exposure time and some Photoshop magic to get the photo up to par. SOBEH (Stichting voor de Ontwikkeling en Bouw van een Experimenteel Hefschroefvliegtuig) was founded in 1952 to develop a helicopter. Ater the H-1 followed the H-2 and an improved model, the H-3 Kolibrie was built in series by NHI. Unfortunately the aircraft wasn't a succes and production was halted in 1961 after a total of 11 had been built. The aircraft in the photo was produced by SOBEH and registered between December 1954 and March 1958. Transferred to the TU Delft and later to the HTS in Haarlem. To the museum in August 2001.

The Mercury Chic T-2 was a lightweight aircraft designed and built by Mercury Aircraft Co. of Hammondsport, NY. First flight was in 1928, and about 27 were built. Slide taken in outdoor aircraft display area at the original USAF Museum site. The X-3 was transferred to the museum in 1956, and is now on display inside the current museum. The X-3 never reached its potential due to underpowered engines, but it did contribute data on high speed stability issues. The X-3 wing design was used on both the Lockheed F-104 and the North American X-15.
