The L73 was a largish, luxurious biplane airliner equipped for night flying. The eight passengers seats could be converted to four bunk beds. Two L73bs, D-960 and D-961, were delivered to DLH and employed on a Berlin - Königsberg night service from 1927. They were upgraded to L73c standard with different engines in 1928 but D-961 crashed on 28 May 1928. Two more planes, construction numbers 10118 and 10119, were built for DLH in 1930 and sold to Bulgaria in 1931. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

Two weeks after Lindbergh's solo flight, Clarence Chamberlin and Charles Levine crossed the Atlantic from New York to Eisleben in Germany in the WB-2 Columbia. In their triumphant tour they visited Budapest. This excellent aircraft, which went on to make many long-range flights, had been Lindbergh's first choice, having set an endurance record of 51 hours. The number 140 may be an old race number. The original destination, Paris, has been painted out and oddly Cottbus, where the aircraft stopped by on 7 June before arriving in Berlin, has been added. When the monoplane airliner already ruled the skies, Catron & Fisk came up with the CF-10 triplane. They became International Aircraft Corporation in 1927 and this photo clearly shows that this aircraft, entered in the Dole Air Race to Hawaii by cowboy actor Hoot Gibson and friends, was prepared as the International F-10. The F-10 crashed off Oakland on arrival for the race. The two crew and one passenger swam ashore unhurt. It is believed that this machine was never registered. A five-seat air taxi, the Praga E-211 was a refined development of the pre-war E-210. It was abandoned in favour of the more promising Aero 45. The first of two prototypes first flew on 13 June 1947 and flew to Belgium on 1 July for display at the 3rd Brussels Air Salon. This event took place in the complex housing the Military Museum, but probably in the other wing. British company Cunliffe-Owen displayed a full-size model of their Concordia small airliner. The Olympic brand name was briefly used by the Loughead brothers when the Lockheed company had been sold to Detroit Aircraft. The Duo-4 twin had only a few inches of clearance between the two propellers. It was reportedly damaged during its first flight here at the Muroc Dry Lake on 18 March 1931. Other sources say it first flew in 1930. It was later rebuilt as the Duo-6 with bigger engines. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

The Champion Lancer was designed as a low cost twin aimed at the training market. With fixed pitch propellers and non-retractable landing gear, single engine performance was lackluster. Production began in 1963 and ended the next year with 25 -36 (various sources can't agree on the final number) aircraft built. Not a great performer, but it's uniqueness and rarity still make it stand out. The registration on this one was valid until 2018.

Originally the last Sikorsky landplane, the S-37 was designed in 1927 for René Fonck to compete for the Orteig Prize, the prize Lindbergh won with his New York - Paris flight. This second example, the S-37-2, was built as a bomber for the USAAC, in association with Consolidated. Both S-37s saw airline service later on. Registered NR942M by 1934, the S-37-2 set out from Chicago on a flight around the world, captained by one William H Alexander. This was to improve relations between the USA and the USSR. It crashed in the North Atlantic, however, on 17 October 1934. Construction number also given as 1 or 4. Photo from: Flight

Built in 1919 and registered as NC853. When the museum received the aircraft, the only existing piece was the fuselage. Volunteers were able to restore it and build new wings, etc. to produce this beautiful display. The Curtiss Museum also has an extensive collection of motorcycles and automobiles just a few of which are visible in the photo.
