This is a rare Mitsubishi G3M2 bomber, converted for passenger use as a so-called Mitsubishi Two-Engined Transport. It is seen here arriving at Oakland from Seattle, and would later depart for Los Angeles, while on a round-the-world good will flight, sponsored by the Japanese Mainichi newspaper. The aircraft departed Japan on 26 Aug 1939 and returned there on 20 Oct 1939, via North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia, travelling a total distance of 52,886 km (32,862 miles) in 55 days (194 flight hours).

The BT-12 was built of steel sheeting on a tubular frame. Fleetwings argued that spot-welding steel was quicker than riveting aluminium and easier to maintain and, at the same time, that the use of steel saved aluminium. This airframe wears no readable serial but it can only be the XBT-12 prototype, first flown in 1939, which Rudy Arnold also photographed on the ground on 1 May 1941 at Wright Field. It took the company until 1942 to build one more aircraft against an order for 176. 23 were completed in 1943 before the project was cancelled. Not everything got done fast during WWII! It looks rather crude but the Blériot 110, designed by Italian engineer Filippo Zappata, broke several world records including a point-to point distance of 9105 km (5657 miles) flown from New York to Lebanon in August 1933. It had a span of 26.50 m (86 ft 11 in) and could carry 6000 litres of fuel near the centre of gravity forward of the two crew. The sole example was named Joseph Le Brix after the recently deceased long-range aviator in January 1932. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Rakowice will be known to some viewers as the now urbanized site of the Polish Aviation Museum in Cracow. The He 64 two-seater was designed for the 1932 Challenge International de Tourisme which was organised in Berlin. A 7363-km rally around Europe commenced on 21 August and the leading contenders reached Zagreb on the first day, via Warsaw, Cracow, Prague, Brno and Vienna. The six He 64s were the fastest aircraft, but did not score very well in the technical trials. Dietrich von Massenbach in D-2303 came third in the rally but only 15th overall. At the foot of Europe's highest peak. The Potez company opened a station here in 1929 and evidently used this Potez 32 four-passenger aircraft for sightseeing flights. It had been returned from Canada after brief use by Fast Air Service Transport in Montreal. The Bessonneau hangar was built in 1928 and it still stands! Thankfully it was declared a monument in 2020. Great photo showing K5912 taxiing while another London gets airborne behind it. Five Londons were flown to Sydney as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the colony of Sydney, New South Wales. K5912 was lost on November 14, 1939 when it forced landed on the North Sea. The crew were picked up the HMS Imperial and the aircraft then sunk by gun fire. BuNo 1813 in flight near New York - NRAB New York was Floyd Bennett Field. This was one of 50 SBC-4s urgently sold to France in June 1940. 44 of the Helldivers were loaded on the French aircraft carrier Bearn in Halifax, having been pulled across the Canadian border at Haulton, Maine to comply with the US Neutrality Act. Upon the fall of France, Béarn put in at Martinique where the aircraft were left to rot by the Vichy administration. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

The one and only Silver Wings was built by George Mackenzie of Pella, Victoria about 1921. After some testing and an accident at Pella, further testing took place at Belmont Common in 1926. The Silver Wings was supposed to be registered in May 1926 but that did not occur. The propeller is displayed at the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre, not far from Pella. The Renault engine, built by Kelly & Lewis, is with the Australian National Aviation Museum collection in Melbourne. Photo from: State Library of Victoria

Built by Steve Wolf as a replica of the original Pitts Samson. Wolf started to convert Pitts Specials from 1978, supported by Curtis Pitts. Engine plating, undercarriage, ailerons and wings were part of the modifications which led to increased speed, roll ability and more G-force resistance. WS-002 was the second built aircraft and was modified to incorporate learning points from the first built. Wolf also built a 3/4 scale Samson (Samson Mite-1, N749SM, WM-001). 2 other Samsons were built by others, but both were involved in crashes. It appears that only the Samson Mite-1 still exists.
