During WWII, the USAAF accepted 3,144 C-46s (1,410 were C-46Ds) for hauling cargo and personnel and for towing gliders. This C-46D was retired from USAF service in Panama in 1968 and is now on display at the national Museum of the USAF as an aircraft flying the 'Hump', transporting war materials over the Himalayas from India to China after the Japanese had closed the Burma Road.

This P-47 is in reality 42-23278 and ex N347D but painted as 'Fiery Ginger IV' flown by the highest scoring P-47 Paciific theatre ace and Medal of Honor recipient, Col. Neel Kearby. On 5th March 1944, whilst on a mission to Wewak a Ki-43 'Oscar' fighter pilot shot down 'Fiery Ginger IV' and Col. Kearby was killed. After the war, the wreckage of the aircraft lay undisturbed and forgotten until the 1990s, when the tailfin was recovered to make a poignant addition to this display at the National Museum of the USAF.

This is one of 45 examples of the training MXY7-K1 Ohka glider completed. It is equipped with a landing skid and flaps so it could be re-used. It also carried water ballast, which was expelled before landing, in place of explosives and the rocket motor. Now on display at the National Museum of the USAF.

Originally developed for rugged Canadian bush country operations, the Norseman's qualities were recognised by the USAAF and so Noorduyn produced 762 examples for the USAAF before WWII ended. On Dec. 15, 1944, a UC-64A disappeared on a flight from England to France with bandleader Maj. Glenn Miller on board. The aircraft was never found. This Norseman on display at the National Museum of the USAF is actually 44-70296 but marked as a plane based in Alaska late in WWII.

In the early 1960s, the USAF investigated the conversion of the Cessna T-37 jet-powered primary trainer for counterinsurgency missions. This lead eventually to the successful development of the YA-37A and the subsequent conversion of 39 T-37s into A-37s for use in Vietnam. This YA-37A was retired to the National Museum of the USAF for display in July 1970.

The Super Courier was a light utility transport with excellent STOL capability that allowed it to operate from a clearing the size of a football field. This along with its ability to fly slowly at speeds of approximately 30 mph made it an excellent aircraft for visual reconnaissance and as a FAC. This U-10D on display at the National Museum of the USAF is painted and marked as an aircraft assigned to the 5th Air Commando Squadron in SE Asia in 1968.
