Toward the end of WWII, the Soviet Union saw the need for, but lacked completely, a strategic bombing capability similar to that of the USAAF. On four occasions during 1944, B-29s made emergency landings in Soviet territory after bombing Japan. Three repairable B-29s were flown to Moscow and delivered to the Tupolev OKB enabling reverse-engineered copies to be produced in less than two years. This example is on display at the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino.

The MiG-17 (NATO reporting name Fresco) was a high-subsonic fighter aircraft produced in the USSR from 1952 as an advanced development of the very similar appearing MiG-15. This example is on display at the Central Museum of the Air Force at Monino.

VTOL research aircraft of the 1960s - the last survivor of four "Freehands" built.

The MiG-9 'Fargo' was the first turbojet fighter developed by Mikoyan-Gurevich in the years immediately after WWII. It was moderately successful with 610 built but suffered from persistent problems with engine flameouts when firing its guns at high altitudes due to gun gas ingestion. In the end the newly developed MiG-15 proved to have better performance so further development was stopped. An example of this important milestone in the history of Soviet aviaton is on display at the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino.

The Su-7B was the main Soviet ground-attack aircraft of the 1960s. this example is on display at the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino.

Note the extra cockpit window in the Russian-built DC-3. In addition to building perhaps 5000 Li-2s, the Soviet Union received 700 C-47s during WWII. It also got 870 B-25s, one of which is seen in the background.

The Yak-141 'Freestyle was intended as a supersonic, VTOL aircraft for air defence of the Soviet fleet. Four prototypes were produced before the program was cancelled with this example making the first (conventional) flight and the first vertical landing on a carrier. It is now on display at the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino.

This Cub was built in 1958 and was subsequently operated by the Soviet Air Force until 1964, totalling 818 hours and 562 cycles. It has been displayed in the Air Force museum at Monino since July 1973.

The Mil V-12 (NATO reporting name Homer) is the largest helicopter ever built and this example is the second prototype and last built of the type (sometimes incorrectly quoted as c/n 002). In 1975 it went on display at Monino without any registration (actual operational registration is unknown). In 2012 it was falsely painted as seen here, with the registration of the first prototype (which was still preserved at the MVZ im. Milya factory at Tomilino by 2018).
Both prototype V-12s outperformed their design specifications and set numerous world records which still stand today, Despite these achievements the Soviet Air Force refused to accept the helicopter and all development on the V-12 was stopped in 1974.

The final variant of the DB-3 medium bomber was designated Il-4.

Its unswept long-span wing is not very apparent here, but the Yak-25RV Mandrake is a special reconnaissance variant of the Yak-25 which could climb to altitudes of over 21 km (68,900 ft).
