After military service with the USAF (44-63872) and the RCAF (9552) between 1947 - 56, this Mustang was sold surplus as N6519D (N5618D after 1961 although there is some confusion with another Mustang as RCAF 9543 was registered N6518D in 1956 but later became N6519D). Racing at Reno beginning in 1969 with race number 18, the aircraft is pictured at Reading, PA with a new warbird color scheme. Tragically, the it crashed on a local flight at Harlingen, TX June 27, 1970 in a stall / spin accident.

This is the second prototype of the Kellett XR-8, the XR-8A, which had rounded tailfins. It had two-bladed intermeshing rotors first, but these were replaced by three-bladed rotors soon. In a sequence of photos by Rudy Arnold, it is flagged down by a Philadelphia motorcycle cop at a 25 mph speed limit sign - much the same joke as seen in photo 363024. Flying the troublesome Kellett helicopters was not fun at all, but it is not clear when both XR-8s flew for the last time. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

The XR-10, which was to carry ten troops, was said to be the largest helicopter in the world. It first flew on 24 April 1946. This photo was probably taken during a press demonstration on 25 September. Powered by two Wright R-975 Whirlwind engines in nacelles on the sides, the beast was dangerous to fly and the prototype crashed on 3 October 1949, killing test pilot Dave Driskill. G&A Aircraft, formerly Pitcairn, became a subsidiary of Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in 1943. Their Model GA-45 first flew as the single-seat XR-9 in Mar-1946, but was converted within a month to the tandem two-seater XR-9B. G & A was renamed to Firestone Aircraft Company in mid 1946, but all development ceased in 1947. Two airframes were built, the second one being the civil Model GA-45D prototype, NX58457, having side-by-side seats. That helicopter is preserved at Fort Rucker, painted as the tandem-seat military prototype. Photo from: Wright State University
