The GAL-38 was a slow four-engine long-endurance aircraft that was supposed to shadow enemy fleet movements - clearly no opposition in the air was expected at sea. The Air Ministry print identifies the type as the S.23/37 after the 1937 specification, but the same designation would apply to the competing Airspeed AS.39 which was also built. This is the first of two GAL-38 prototypes, which had its triple tailfins replaced by a tall single fin by June 1941. The date stamp on the back seems to read June 1943 but P1758 was already ordered to the scrap heap in March 1942. Photo from: Air Ministry (UK)

Serial 664 was the first production standard Vickers FB. 5 Gunbus and this aircraft saw its first action on Christmas Day 1914, when it took off from Joyce Green Airfield, Dartford, Kent, England, to engage a German Friedrichschafen FF29. Seen here with its original semi-circular tailplane probably at Brooklands Airfield, Surrey, England. Scanned from an original (republished) photograph by the Real Photographic Company, Liverpool. N114 was the second of three Blackburds (not Blackbird). It was used for torpedo trials at East Fortune but was also tested at Martlesham Heath and Gosport. Built at Brough, Yorkshire. Blackburds needed to release their undercarriages to release their torpedoes. They landed on skids or ditched. N114 had floats under the wings to aid buoyancy. Lost out to the Short Shirl which as later cancelled in favour of more Sopwith Cuckoos. N114 was used for spares for N115 which flew on into 1919 as a station hack.
