Built by Percival Spencer and engineer Vincent Larsen at Farmingdale, Long Island, in May 1938. Amassed only 10 hours before it was dismantled but succeeded in visiting several airfields in close proximity to Farmingdale. Spencer made a second attempt at an amphibious flying boat in 1940, the Spencer Air Car. That design was sold to Republic and developed as the Seabee. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

J.D. Reed Co of Houston was the owner of this air racing P-38L. The Pegasus that features in the markings is the logo of sponsor Mobil Oil. Reed sold the aircraft in 1953 and was later with the then Confederate Air Force and also raced as White Lightning. Crash-landed in 2001 and ended up with Red Bull. Now fully restored and based in Europe as N25Y. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

Delivery of Aero O/Y's second Ju 52 - OH-ALK was already put in service during 1932. These aircraft operated on floats in summer until the opening of Malmi airport in 1938. In peacetime after the Winter War on 14 June 1940, operating Aero O/Y flight 1631 from Tallinn, Kaleva was shot down by two Soviet DB-3 bombers during Soviet preparations to occupy Latvia. All nine people on board, including diplomatic couriers, were killed. This is said to have been the first commercial airliner shootdown by fighter aircraft in history. The S-59 or XH-34 (originally YH-18B) was a development from the S-52-2 (YH-18A) with an XT51 (Artouste) turbine engine, four-blade rotor and retractable landing gear. Two XH-39s modified from H-18s. Seen in Building 6008 at Fort Rucker, this is the XH-39A, former c/n 52007, which flew and broke a few world records; the other XH-39, 49-2891 (c/n 59002) reportedly never flew as such. Type rejected in favour of Bell H-40 Huey. One civilian S-59, N74150, was also built and is preserved in the New England Air Museum. Photo by: Alan Wilson

The stencilled registration may indicate this was an aircraft that was to be exported. It is not among the FAA historical registration information nor is there a Porterfield in the FAA records with the c/n 750. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Reregistered N21C for the 1948 National Air Races. Continued to be raced until 1960 and remained on the register until 1970. Became part of a bundle of Cosmic Wind aircraft, components and jigs sold in UK in 1992. N21C was registered G-NZIC because it looked vaguely like N21C.
