It flew its last service for the airline on 18th March 1955 and was subsequently used by the Aircraft Operating Company for aerial survey work throughout Africa, before undergoing restoration with the SAA apprentice school at what was then known as Jan Smuts International Airport.

It was delivered to the South African government in Aug 1941 as ZS-ATL, and served as a VIP aircraft for General Jan C. Smuts during WW2. Was transferred to South African Airways circa 1946, still as ZS-ATL. Sold to Commercial Airways (later Comair) in Dec 1955. The Lodestar's last flight was on 25 Nov 1968, and donated to the SAA Technical School at Johannesburg in 1974 for instructional use. Transferred to the SAAF Museum on 20 Apr 1983.
