VH-ASU came to TAA from Qantas when TAA took over Qantas' Queensland operations. It had originally been built for the RAAF. TAA sold it to a cropdusting operator, Airfarmers, in Victoria in 1955. It continued as an agricultural aircraft, later registered VH-APJ, until withdrawn from use in 1964. Its fate after that is uncertain. One report says it was burnt and another says it became spare parts. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

Arrived in Australia in 1933 and saw war service with the RAAF as A34-7. Sold by APL to the Catholic Mission of the Divine Word in Papua New Guinea in August 1948. Qantas bought it in 1950 and was still in service with the airline when it crashed on approach to Menyamya, PNG, on December 24, 1951. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

VH-UVB in the aftermath of a Japanese air raid on January 21, 1942. In March Salamaua and the airstrip were occupied by the Japanese army. The airstrip was won back by Australian troops in September 1943. The airstrip was abandoned after the war. The jungle has reclaimed it but the area is still pock-marked with bomb craters
