This aircraft was never delivered to the RAF. It did very briefly appear on the UK register in 1955 as G-ANZK owned Field Aircraft Services. The registration may have to been to cover the ferry flight to Bovingdon where it was broken up the same year. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

To get extra life out of the inadequate Roc fighter, floats were fitted with the aim of producing a target tug to replace Blackburn Shark floatplanes used in the role by the FAA. L3059 was the prototype. It showed instability and was wrecked in an accident at the Helensburgh Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment in December 1939. A second conversion with an enlarged ventral fin was completed but its performance was poor. The FAA ended up replacing its Shark target tugs with landplanes. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

The Universal (no F designation) was the first type by the Atlantic Fokker company and lacked the cantilever wing of the European Fokkers, but fulfilled the needs of American aviation companies at the time. Aero Corporation of California was a flying school, workshop and regional distributor of Fokker. NC696 was the fourth Universal to pass through Aero and was used for demonstration and charter flights before delivery to Pacific Air Transport. Standard Airlines, active from late 1927, was a subsidiary of Aero. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

This early Tri-Motor was the first plane of Maddux Air Lines, bought by Jack Maddux in July 1927. On other photos taken here at Dutch Flats, or Ryan Field, it still wears its initial registration NC3114, so perhaps changes were made here. By 1928, it reportedly wore fleet number 1 on the fuselage. This is the same Tri-Motor that was put on display in Pennsylvania Station in New York City in 1931. It was later sold or given to Henry Ford for his museum, but somehow it has not survived. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

The third Ryan ST, and the first ST-A with a more powerful Menasco engine of 125 hp - information that the first five were basic STs is apparently wrong. Ryan pilot John Fornacero is in the front cockpit and in the rear seat is Peter Dana, a noted young pilot who got his licence at the Ryan flying school in 1934 at the age of 18. This plane was registered to him and he became a Ryan distributor in New Hampshire. It seems that he was an airline pilot with Northwest Airlines in the 1950s. The Ryan M-2 mailplane was similar to the M-1 except for a new, lighter I-beam wing spar. This particular airframe, however, received a fully enclosed cabin. This is not US Army s/n 41-242 which was an AT-6A. It is almost certainly c/n 1242, the sixth DC-2 built, NC13716 with TWA and with Braniff Airways from 1937. Braniff's DC-2 fleet went to the Defense Supply Corporation (DSC) as of 1 June 1942. NC13716 was converted to a C-32A and was taken on charge by the USAAF on 18 June as 42-61095. The photo was apparently taken in the same month. Is the emblem worn associated with Braniff? The letters underneath read ASC or ASG, not DSC. Does anyone know more? Of the 18 DC-2s delivered to KLM, no less five were written off in crashes within three years. Maraboe crashed on the bumpy runway of Bushire, Iran in July 1935, only a few months old. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Attached to the Torpedo Development Unit at the time of the photo. P1272 was transferred to 14 OTU which trained night bomber crews before being reassigned to 455 Sqn RAAF. It was lost during a raid on Hamburg on December 1, 1941. Ironically, a few months later 455 was moved from Bomber Command to Coastal Command where it became a torpedo bomber squadron. Beaufighters finally replaced the obsolete Hampdens in October 1943. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
