An interesting photo of Lady Peace, the transatlantic aircraft famously stuffed with ping pong balls. During the return flight to New York it had lost fuel and made an emergency landing at Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland, damaging the propeller. Pilot Dick Merrill's employer, Eastern Air Lines, sent a DC-2, NC13731, to the Harbour Grace airstrip and spare parts reached Musgrave Harbour by boat. Lady Peace hopped over to Harbour Grace on 18 September and arrived in New York on 21 September 1936. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

NZ4112 was sold to Australian Aircraft Sales in 1966. AAS removed the Pratt and Whitney R-1830 engines and the hulk was abandoned. NZ4112 became a clubhouse for the Hobsonville Yacht Club until 1973 when the club was ordered to remove it. The cockpit and nose turret section was roughly removed and the rest scrapped. The cockpit and turret now with the Ferrymead Heritage Park. Photo from: RNZAF/Air Force Museum of New Zealand

Flown by noted former barnstorming pilot Duke Krantz, the 'news plane' came to Harbour Grace to cover the story of NR13770 Lady Peace. The DC-2, NC13731, delivered spare parts for the stranded Vultee. NC16515 was sold to Sweden in 1938 as SE-AHM and flew in Finland in 1940 during the Winter War, as OH-SLA. According to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand this is one of the nine Hurricanes supplied to 488 Squadron by 232 Squadron RAF in the dying days of the defence of Singapore. In little more than a week after receiving the first aircraft on January 24, 1942, 488 Sqn had withdrawn to the Dutch East Indies. BM899 remained behind, struck off charge by the RAF as lost in Singapore. Photo from: RNZAF/Air Force Museum of New Zealand
