The F9F-6 Cougar was the US Navy's first swept wing jet. After it was stored at NAF Litchfield Park, AZ, this Cougar was acquired by the City of Anaheim in November 1959. It was parked at what is now Boysen Park in a children's playground. The seat and controls were left in and storage areas open for kids to explore. Years of play caused sharp edges in the metal and in 1967, the jet was covered with wire mesh and a two inch layer of a cement and glue mixture was layered on. Seat and controls removed and compartments sealed for safety, children are still able to crawl all over it.

The link between this type and South Korea is that early in the Korean war (on 3 July 1950), a USN F9F-3 from VF-51, operating from USS Valley Forge, downed a North Korean Yak-9P. This airplane was built at Grumman's factory located in Bethpage, Long Island and delivered to the Navy in 1955. It served with fighter squadrons VF-111 and VF-94 at Moffett Field in California. In 1957 it was transferred to Naval Air Training Center in Kingsville, Texas and used as a chase plane. This Cougar was withdrawn from active service in 1965. The plane is displayed in the colors of the VF-61 fighter squadron, which flew from Intrepid aircraft carrier in 1956.
