The evening light falls on this Tomcat on display on the flight deck of CV-10 USS Yorktown in the markings of VF-143 "Pukin' Dogs" that was reassigned with CVW-7 in Aug 1992 to CVN-73 USS George Washington, then the USN'S newest aircraft carrier.

Normally two fixed wing ASW squadrons were embarked on a CVS, with requirements subsequently changing for the CVA and CV. This S-2E belongs to VS-23 "Black Cats" which did three Vietnam deployments aboard USS Yorktown. Along with VS-25 "Golden Eagles" also flying the Tracker, the two fixed wing ASW units with tail code 'NU' flew under CVSG-55 that was operational till 27 Sep 1968. The 70 million candlepower searchlight is visible on the starboard wing. This variant had 16 JEZEBEL sonobuoys / nacelle.

Derived from the A3D Skywarrior designed to operate from supercarriers as a nuclear bomber, the seven-seat EA-3B was the electronic recce and ECM variant. A crew of four operated the long Q-Band sideways looking ventral radar. The type entered service in Apr 1960 and was still flying during Op Desert Storm, standing down in 1991. This EA-3B served with VQ-1 "World Watchers" at NAS Agana, was embarked on CNV-70 USS Carl Vinson and went to VQ-2 "Sandeman" at NAVSTA Rota. It was saved for preservation by many donors and volunteers.

The unit moved from the F-8 Crusader to the F-4 in 1966. Deployed aboard CVA-66 USS America, it arrived on Yankee Station on 13 Jul 1972. On 11 Sep 1972 Maj. Lee T. Lasseter and RIO Capt. J. Cummings shot down a MiG-21 near Hanoi but were hit by a SA-2, forcing the crew to eject over the sea. It was the only all-Marine kill during the Vietnam War. VMFA-333 was the last regular USMC unit to operate the Phantom.

The original '66' of HS-4 was the primary recovery helicopter for Apollo 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13. It was lost at sea off NALF Imperial Beach in 1975. Commissioned in 1952, HS-4 "Black Knights" became the first ASW helicopter squadron to deploy aboard an aircraft carrier. During a single deployment in SEA in 1966, it set a record of rescuing 24 downed airmen. HS-4 pioneered SAR techniques for the Apollo capsule recoveries.

VA-75 "Sunday Punchers" was the first squadron to deploy in 1965 with the A-6A Intruder aboard CV-62 USS Independence during the Vietnam War. It received the A-6E in 1973. Building on its record in the Vietnam War, VA-75 further distinguished itself as the most decorated Navy squadron of Operation Desert Storm. It operated the Intruder till the unit was disestablished in 1997.

The A-7E succeeded the A-7B after the USN was impressed with the uprated non-afterburning Allison TF41-A-2 turbofan. From the early 1970s, most fleet squadrons flew the 'E.' BuNo 159291 A-7E is painted as BuNo 153176 in the colors of VA-147 "Argonauts," first unit to fly the A-7A light attack jet into combat over Vietnam in Dec 1967 as part of CVW-2 embarked on CVA-61 USS Ranger. It carries the name of Cdr G. Kinnear, who flew more types of jet aircraft in combat than any other naval aviator.
