The Thunderflash was the first jet to be developed specifically to fill a reconaissance role. The Luftwaffe received 102 examples that served until 1965-66 when they were replaced by the RF-104G Starfighter. This particular example served with the USAF 66th TRW as 52-7436 at Sembach before being transferred to the Luftwaffe AG-52 and ending up at the Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr at Gatow.

Wearing the markings of AG 52, the Federal German Luftwaffe's second photo recce wing. It was disbanded in 1994 and its black panther head badge was then adopted by its elder sister wing, AG 51 'Immelmann'. AG 51 moved from Bremgarten in southwest Germany to Schleswig - Jagel in the early 1990s, absorbing the Tornado force of the German Navy. The wing was renamed TLG 51 in 2013.

USAF 51-17047, to Norwegian AF 51-17047 taken on charge May-1956, struck off charge Aug-1969. For the next 20 years it was used as an experimental subject for NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) warfare purposes. Later it was restored and delivered to the Norsk Luftfartsmuseum in Bodø. Only the nose is on display. It is carrying the markings of 717 Sqn
