The second of the 30 production examples of this early carrier jet fighter, assigned to Air Development Squadron 3 (VX-3), NAS Patuxent River, MD from 1949. It featured "Metalite" skin, made from balsa wood sandwiched between two thin sheets of aluminum. Around 1951 it was moved to Socorro, NM for damage trials and weapons testing on a firing range. By 2002 it had been saved by the New England Air Museum and was then trucked to the Vought plant at Hensley Field, TX for restoration by the Vought Aircraft Heritage Foundation, moving to the National Museum of Naval Aviation in 2012

On the apron at Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum. The F-104F was the dual-control trainer version of the F-101B interceptor that was fully combat-capable. Twenty of the trainers were supplied to Canada as the CF-101F, of which this was one with s/n 17400. It served with No. 416, 409 and 410 Sqn RCAF. A CF-101F flew the world's last Voodoo flight on 9 Apr 1987. The Voodoo is painted in the markings of 60th FIS "Fighting Crows" based at Otis AFB on QRA for Soviet bombers. This was the first Air Defense Command unit to receive the F-101B on 5 Jan 1959 that used the type till 1971.

I'd last seen this unique Savage in 1973 when it was being used as a fanjet testbed by Avco-Lycoming registered N68667 (my photo here). Such a pity the paintwork has faded so much since restoration over 20 years ago

Like so many of the aircraft in the outdoor storage area, this Herc's paintwork is suffering badly from weathering. While on loan to the Naval Air Test Center from VR-1, in October and November 1963 it made history by making 21 full-stop landings and unassisted take-offs on the USS Forrestal, so becoming the largest and heaviest aircraft to land on a carrier. At the time it was marked 'Look Ma, No Hook'. Transferred to the USMC at the end of 1963. Much later, saw action in Operations Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom
