0627 was a BT-1 converted to the XBT-2, the progenitor of the Douglas SBD Dauntless. Its first flight as the XBT-2 was on 22 April 1938. It was assigned to NACA's Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in February 1939 for full-scale wind tunnel tests. The XBT-2 had the characteristic perforated flaps, but here they appear to have been replaced. Photo by: Carl Mydans / Life

This is actually Tri-Motor N7861, delivered to the Union Electric Light and Power Company of Saint Louis as a corporate transport in 1928. In 1941 it passed to Johnson Flying Service, Missoula, MT for use as a sprayer then in the early 1960s as a smokejumper platform in forest fire control operations. Entered the museum in 1973 and restored to represent a USN RR-5 Tri-Motor

The 64 SON-1s built by the Naval Aircraft Factory were essentially Curtiss SOC-3 Seagulls. The 3-O-3 code indicates the third aircraft of the first section (red lower half of nose) of VO-3 (blue tailfin), thus assigned to the first ship in the 3rd Battleship Division, USS Idaho. See photo 422633 for more on this and note that VO-3 was converting to the OS2U Kingfisher around this time. Idaho sent to Atlantic in 1941 but returned to Pacific after Pearl Harbor. The other three in front are 165539/4, 165666/4 and 165664/7. Odd how the Blue Angels are flying two with team number '4' at once

This was the second Skyhawk to be built, flying as a YA4D-1 in 1954 just two months after the prototype. Transferred to Naval Aircraft Rework Facility (NARF) in 1960 and emerged as a standard A4D-1 (A-4A from 1962), joining VA-83 at NAS Oceana until transferred to Naval Air Facility China Lake for tests in late 1962. Stuck off in mid-1963, it went into store at Litchfield Park but was retrieved by NATC at Patuxent River in 1967 for further testing. Finally retired in 1969 and by 1979 was with the museum and restored to its VA-83 colours

Taken on Charge with the USN with BuNo 46602 in October 1944 and deployed to Brazil, flying anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic. Placed in store at NAS Litchfield Park, AZ in 1949 and supplied to the Mexican Navy in 1957. Acquired by The Flying Firemen as CF-FZZ in 1966. In 1986 sold as N607CC and delivered to the museum in 1987. Extensively damage by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 but repaired and now awaits shipment on loan to the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

This Privateer is a composite of several sections from different aircraft put together by Hawkins & Powers at their Greybull, WY base before ferrying to Pensacola in 1983, adopting the identity of 66304/N2870G. However several authoritative sources point to the majority coming from 33261/N7682C, incorporating major parts from 66304, 59882 and 66313. What is clear, however, is that it has suffered extensive hurricane damage

Constructed as a B.18S, this aircraft was the last civil delivery of a Beech 18 before production was switched to military orders for the duration of WWII. It flew as NC1040 for a newspaper company until impressed for use by the USN from 1942 as JRB-2 BuNo 09771 and saw service with the Marines. After the war it was based at NAS Corpus Christi, NAS Alameda, NAS Anacostia and MCAS Cherry Point before remanufacture as an SNB-5P in 1953, then serving at NAS Willow Grove, NAS Glenview, NAS Atlanta and NAS Pensacola. Moved to the museum in 1962 (displayed indoors around 2012)
