When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. They served with 28 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof alongside the Hercules until the fleet was retired at the end of 1992. During the Border War era, the SAAF operated their Transalls with very discrete markings. Only the last digit of the registration is painted on aircraft and above the cockpit windows. Here seen at the then AFB Pietersburg. Photographer unknown

A severe cyclone named "Gafilo" hit Madagascar in March 2004. South Africa offered help and airlifted four Oryx helicopters to Antananarivo. 1237 is seen here after being flown in by an IL-76, re-assembled and ready for a technical flight, before assisting the relief efforts throughout the island. A total of 50 Oryx helicopters were built for the SAAF by Atlas / Denel.

During the Rhodesian and Border Wars, the South African Air Force kept a low profile with no national markings. The last number(s) of the serial were stenciled on the nose. This is 6859 a Dakota that was delivered to the RAF in March 1944. The following year 6859 went to the SAAF where she was active with 28, 44 and 60 Sqds for 49 years. In 1994 she was transferred to the SAAF Museum in flying condition. Here seen landing at Phalaborwa in the then Transvaal (now Limpopo), home to the 7th South African Infantry Battalion.

This Shackleton became famous 14 years after this picture was taken. After it had been withdrawn from use in 1990, it was restored into flying condition. On 12 July 1994, it took off headed for England to take part in several airshows, flown by active SAAF pilots. Unfortunately, the aircraft had to make a belly landing in the Western Sahara on July 13th and subsequently was written off. The aircraft still remains there, slowly being burried under the sand.
