When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. They served with 28 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof alongside the Hercules until the fleet was retired at the end of 1992. During the Border War era, the SAAF operated their Transalls with very discrete markings. Only the last digit of the registration is painted on aircraft and above the cockpit windows.
