Flying over East Java during the Dutch attempts to regain control. Following the Japanese conquest of the Netherlands East Indies, surviving and newly delivered Dutch Catalinas equipped No 321 (Dutch) Sqn, RAF, in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). This amphibious PBY-5A, original serial Y-75, entered service on 9 September 1942, but hit a rock on arrival at RAF China Bay and sank. It was salvaged and repaired as a transport aircraft. It served until 1952 when it was broken up at Biak, Netherlands New Guinea. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Developed in 1928, the C.VIIw was a two-seat reconnaissance and training seaplane of which 30 examples were built. Jaap de Moor, whose father served at Morokrembangan, noted the protective bow pudding attached to each float 'by the sailing navy' as Jaap, himself a former naval pilot, put it. 'Three seaplanes from De Mok air station landed on the Amstel River near the gasworks [former Zuidergasfabriek] this morning. It was not an emergency, the aeroplane pilots very calmly taxied to the Amstel Bridge before turning back. It was just a routine exercise. After cruising around for half an hour, they took off again near the Amstellaan [now Vrijheidslaan, bridge there built in 1932] and flew to Schellingwoude naval air station.' In 1955 the Dutch bought 17 former US Navy PBM-5s for the defence of Netherlands New Guinea, which was claimed by Indonesia. The Mariner turned out to be a death trap - six of the large amphibians crashed with considerable loss of life. An Avenger is seen on the right here. From 1926 the Wal was the mainstay of the Dutch navy's air fleet in the Netherlands East Indies, now Indonesia. The type was built under licence by Aviolanda in Papendrecht, Holland. Seen here off the fishing village of Volendam, D-21 was one of three to be flown - rather than shipped - to the Far East in April-May 1929. D-22 crashed in Baghdad. The C.VIII was designed as a three-seat strategic reconnaissance aircraft for the Dutch army, but rejected. Nine C.VIIIw floatplanes were ordered by the navy. G-1 was the first of these, delivered in 1930, and the photo was probably taken early on. The same aircraft was temporarily registered PH-AFQ and displayed at the 1930 Paris Air Show.
