This Me-262A is on display in the WWII Gallery at the National Museum of the USAF. It was brought to the US from Germany in July 1945 for flight evaluation. Subsequently restored by the 96th Mobile Maintenance Squadron, Kelly Air Force Base, TX in 1976-1979. It is painted without operational unit markings to represent an aircraft that has just left the production line.

'Memphis Belle II' arrived at the National Museum of the USAF for display in April 1990. This is the paint scheme she wore whilst serving in the 357th TFS, 355th TFW based at Takhli Royal Thai Air Base in Thailand. Note the two red stars under the cockpit representing the two MiG kills it claimed during the Southeast Asia War.

This was the first C-130 to be converted to a AC-130 'Spectre' Gunship, the conversion being carried out at Wright-Patterson AFB. It is fitting, therefore, that she is now on display there at the wonderful National Museum of the USAF.

The bomb bay of the B-36 almost seems more reminiscent of the interior of a giant cathedral than a space designed to carry 86,000lb of a conventional or nuclear payload (almost 10x that of a B-17!). This B-36 is on display at the incredible National Museum of the USAF.

The O-47 was an observation fixed-wing aircraft used by the Army Air Corps and intended as a replacement for earlier observation biplanes. Note the windows in the belly to overcome the obscured visibility from the wings for downward observation and photography. Proving flights demonstrated the O-47 was too large and heavy and it was soon relegated to duties such as towing targets and coastal patrol. This example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF as 37-328 in the markings from the 112th OS of the Ohio NG, but it is actually ex 39-112.

The XF-85 Goblin was designed to be carried by the Northrop B-35 and Convair B-36 bombers for defense against interceptors, much like the Curtiss F9C Sparowhawk did with the US Navy Airships Akron and Macon in 1929. Performance of the jet was marginal and the trapeze set up was difficult to use so only two aircraft were built and the project was cancelled in 1949.

This B-57 was originally assigned to wright-Patterson AFB as a test aircraft but was returned to combat configuration in 1967 and flew with the 8th BS in Vietnam for more than two years. After returning to the US she was converted to an electronic counter measures EB-57B version and was retired to the National Museum of the USAF in 1981. The museum have restored her back to her Vietnam configuration and markings for display.

The L-2 was not used in combat or sent overseas during WWII, rather only used for liaison pilot training. it went to the Air Mobility Museum at Dover AFB on 13/11/15. It was replaced on display by 43-26592, which was ferried to the NMUSAF on 28/9/11. -26592 is marked as -26588 which was based at Atkinson airport.

The US Air Force bought two Bell 47 Ranger helicopters for Presidential use. On July 12, 1957, Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first President to use a helicopter while in office. They were standard Rangers except for the blue tinted bubble for sun protection, military radios and a rotor brake for quicker shutdowns. Both machines are on display, this one in Dayton and 57-2729 at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Washington.

In 1970 this H-53 took part as 'Apple 1' in the Son Tay raid to free US POWs held in a prison near Hanoi and for which the aircrew were subsequently decorated for their courage. Now on display at the national Museum of the USAF.

This Provider on display at the National Museum of the USAF was accepted by the USAF in 1957 and saw extensive service in Vietnam as a 'Ranch Hand' sprayer (possibly the most ill-conceived and reckless program ever devised by the USAF). The aircraft took almost 600 hits in combat so was named 'Patches' for the damage repairs that covered it. In addition, seven of its crew received the Purple Heart for wounds received in the line of duty.

The Avro 504K was the first introduction to flying for many US pilots during WWI. The type proved very capable and was kept in service as one of the USAAS's primary trainers for years afterwards. This rebuilt example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF and painted to represent one of the 52 Avro 504K aerobatic trainers used at the AEF No. 3 Instruction Center, Issoudun, France during 1918.

The O-1 was developed from the commercial Cessna Model 170 (originally designated L-19s) and were used by the USAF, Army and Marine Corps for such tasks as artillery spotting, front-line comms, medivac and pilot training. In SE Asia they were also deployed on FAC duties but they were slow, lacking range and proved vunerable to ground fire. This led eventually to their replacement with O-2 Skymaster and OV-10 Bronco. This Bird Dog came to the National Museum of the USAF for display in 1971.

Developed from the T-33 Shooting Star the F-94 was the first US all-weather jet interceptor and the first US production jet to have an afterburner. During a training flight in Feb. 1970 this aircraft was involved in a miraculous incident after entering an uncontrollable spin that forced the pilot to eject. Unpiloted, the aircraft recovered on its own, apparently due to the balance and configuration changes caused by the ejection, and miraculously made a gentle belly landing in a snow-covered field. After minor repairs, the aircraft was returned to service and last served with the 49 FIS before being retired to the museum in 1996.

This beautiful old transport is actually 52-1066. She was retired from service to MASDC as CQ362 in September 1974 and had been quickly declared as surplus by November. Fortunately she was saved from the scrapman and is now on display at the incomparable National Museum of the USAF.
