VH-UMI was cancelled in February 1933. It returned to the register in June that year as VH-UXX "Faith in Australia", modified for making long-distance flights.

This short-lived Australian National Airways was formed by Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm in 1930 and ceased operations in Jun 1931. It is not related to the later larger ANA that merged with Ansett in 1957. Smith and Ulm's airline failed after VH-UMF vanished between Sydney and Melbourne on March 21, 1933. It remained missing until October 1958 when the wreckage was found in the Snowy Mountains. The name "Southern Cloud" is missing in this photo but the distinctive rego font is identical to confirmed photos of it. The original photo may have been retouched to remove the name in the wake of the disappearance.

VH-UNJ was withdrawn from use in 1940. By then Queensland Air Navigation was long gone, having closed in January 1931 following a fatal accident.

Although put outside it did not fly that day. In 1998 it was sold to the USA.

Built in 1954 this one one of many classic aircraft that are stored at Falcon Field.

This Avro Rota was one of twelve built by Avro in 1934 and 1935. The type was a licence built Cierva C-30A and it was intended for Army co-operation but they were later used for calibration of coastal radar for which their low flying speed made them eminently suitable

At the Imperial War Museum, Duxford

Seen in its early years at Duxford, having previously been part of the Skyfame collection at Staverton. Later it was repainted into RAF colours as HM580.

In 1992 this Canberra was sold to Gemany and its wings were then fitted to Canberra 99+34.

Built in 1934, this autogyro has a history in Scandinavia as LN-BAD, 99 of the Norwegian military, and SE-AFI. It represents PH-HHH (c/n 712), also built in 1934 as G-ACWJ, which was bought by Dutch private pilot Jacob Mees in 1934 and ended up in the RAF as AP508.

First time for me to see and photograph an autogiro. Autogiros have rotors instead of wings but unlike helicopters they are not powered so unable to hover. The rotor spins around as the autogiro is driven forward by the propeller and generates lift. Autogiros were used by the RAF to check and/or calibrate radar stations as they were able to fly in very tight circles. Indeed at one point the RAF's Radar Calibration Unit was based at Duxford for some time during WWII. Previously G-ACUU

This Avro-built Cierva Autogiro was built in 1934 and imported into Australia, being registered on 14 June 1935. It was used by Engineer Andrew Thyne Reid for private flights, including between his properties in Sydney and Yass. Impressed during the war, it was used in trials for the development of a 'flying jeep' autogyro. Returned to Reid after the war, he continued to use it until 1949. Subsequently donated to the Royal Aero Club of NSW, later purchased by the Powerhouse Museum where it is on display.

Built by Avro as their model 671. Wears the KX code of 529 Squadron RAF which used the type on radar calibration flights in late WW2. Post war G-AHMJ.
