The first kit built SparrowHawk flew in Russia on 23 September 2004. Dealerships were established in North, Central and South America, in India, East Asia and South America. 125 kits had been sold by mid-2008. By November 2009 there were 45 SparrowHawks on the US civil register. One SparrowHawk was on the European (west of Russia) registers in mid-2010. The Russian version is marketed by Aro-Avia. In 2008 GBA announced its intention to sell off the SparrowHawk program. A press release in January 2011 announced an agreement with Guangzhou Suntrans Aviation Science and Technology Co

The prototype of the Ha 139 is launched from Schwabenland, one of several catapult ships operated by Lufthansa for its transatlantic airmail service. These vessels did not refuel seaplanes in mid-ocean, but were stationed in ports in Gambia and Brazil to provide assisted take-offs. In 1937-1938 two ships were based in Horta, Azores, and in Port Washington, New York City, to support a fast trial service across the North Atlantic. Almost the same photograph was made by Rudy Arnold, proving this is off City Island, New York. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

First flown on 1 September 1934, this racer was shipped to Europe on the liner Bremen for participation in the MacRobertson Air Race to Australia, but it had barely been tested and the race organisation would not allow Irish pilot James Fitzmaurice to take on 600 gallons of fuel, causing him to withdraw hours before the start. G-EBYX developed engine trouble on the Koepang-Darwin leg of a flight from the UK and force landed beside the Cape Don lighthouse . The aircraft was wrecked, its engine torn from its mounts. The two crew were evacuated by boat but the Vellore had to be abandoned to the elements. An airstrip was subsequently built to serve the lighthouse, which has been unmanned since 1983. The C-76 was built of wood as a precaution against aluminium shortages but these did not arise in America during WWII. The type also had lots of issues. The first YC-76, 42-86918, lost its tail and crashed one week after its first flight in May 1943. The War Department swiftly cancelled its orders in August 1943. Eleven YC-76 and nine YC-76A airframes were completed by a new Curtiss plant in Kentucky, and five C-76s with lower serial numbers, including this machine, in Buffalo. The US roundel with a red outline was used during the summer of 1943. The chase plane is a CW-22B, NC19446. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

Sole prototype of single-seat Piper first flown in 1945 with a 37-hp Continental A40 engine, and presumably in 1947 with a 55-hp Lycoming O-145, as seen here. An earlier aircraft was known as the Cub Cycle and flown in 1944. A replica of the PA-8, the Carlson Skycycle, was built in 1995. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution
