The Z.501 Gabbiano (mew) single-engined military flying boat had long endurance, but wasn't very robust or seaworthy and suffered heavy losses during WWII. This modified Z.501, I-AGIL, set a seaplane distance record of 4130 km in May 1934, flying from Monfalcone to Massawa in Eritrea. A French seaplane flew 4335 km in June. I-AGIL then managed 4930 km (3060 miles) to Berbera, in Somaliland, in July 1934 - or Anno XII in the Fascist year count. Cantieri Riumiti dell'Adriatico (CRDA) was Cant's full name. Of mixed construction with fixed landing gear, the Ro.51 was outdated when it first flew late in 1937. MM338 was later converted to retractable gear. The second prototype, MM339, was competed as a seaplane fighter. It sank into Lake Bracciano and that was the end of the project. On the right is a Ro.41. This biplane type first flew in 1934. It was unsuccesful as a fighter but found a role as an advanced trainer. Photo from: Fondazione Fiera Milano

Built in 1921 and at the time, the worlds largest flying boat. First flew in 1923 and undertook test flying from the Isle of Grain. The second of three Fairey N.4s, two of which are believed to have ended their lives as houseboats at Felixtowe Ferry, The remains of N119 were eventually scrapped in 1964

It looks fishy, but we believe this is a genuine aircraft nevertheless. Serial below tailplane read from another photo. The ineffective Ca.135 bomber first flew in 1935. Reportedly powered by 900-hp Asso XI engines, this example seems to conform to the early production standard for the Regia Aeronautica. Flight tells us it wore a multi-colour paint job 'consisting mainly of red, grey, yellow and green'. A detailed view of the tail can be had in a photo of the Ca.134 reconnaissance biplane, MM330. The G.18 was a 18-passenger airliner first flown in 1935. It was followed by the uprated G.18V in 1937 as the original aircraft was underpowered. Three G.18s and six G.18Vs were built, all for ALI, which was owned by Fiat. I-EION was impressed as MM60431 in 1940. See other crop for a slightly larger view of the Miles M.11, G-AEYB. Allocated military serial MM347, this light twin-tail prototype was dismissed by Flight as a 'freak'. It was supposedly 'designed for SAIMAN by Francis Lombardi', but WWI ace Lombardi was more like the sales agent. His firm also represented Stinson, Tipsy, Zlin and 'Whitney Straight'. A Miles M.11 Whitney Straight, G-AEYB, is on display on the left. Two Zlin XIIs are on the right, and the dark plane with the light rudder is a Tipsy S.2. The Paraplane used the "Vacuplane principle" in which the airflow was directed through wing slots to reduce pressure over the upper wing area, thus allowing slow flight and STOL performance. Redesigned as the Paraplane II in 1953. Registration cancelled in 1958. The slogan on the side says "Every field an airport". Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Only two prototypes were built of the Go 149, a fighter trainer which, like the Fw 56 Stösser, was single-seat. The BR.20 bomber was already fighting with the Aviazione Legionaria in the Spanish Civil War at this point. It was considered very modern, and exported to Japan, but the limited output of Italian engines meant that the trimotor Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 was eventually more succesful. Only one Monocoach H was built but it acquired many names. It was sometimes the Twin Monocoach and also the Monocoupe H Monocoach, Zenith and Zephyr, the last of which applied to the Menasco-powered version in the photo . The name used here is the manufacturer and model in the US civil register. Lambert was acquired by Monocoupe and it continued to promote the aircraft. Jane's called it a Monocoupe but no aircraft were built by that company. Monocoupe was the registered owner when N15433 was cancelled in 1948. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Dutchman Frits Koolhoven led production of the Royal Aircraft Factory BE.2 at Armstrong Whitworth and designed the FK.3 as an improved aircraft that would be easier to build. 500 production FK.3s were built by AW and by Hewlett & Blondeau at Luton. They mostly served as training aircraft although the type was used operationally by No 47 Sqn which was based in Thessaloniki to fight on the Macedonian Front.

Instructional airframe at the Air Force school of mechanics. It is said that scrapping of this airframe began in 1975, but this photo taken in 1977 seems to suggest otherwise. Photographer: Brian Pickering.
