The FD-2 was Fairey's attempt to investigate flight and control characteristics of the delta-wing design at trans and supersonic speeds. This aircraft's sister plane (WG774) broke the world speed record in 1956 by more than 300 mph, quite an achievement considering the record had been set only a year previously by a F-100.

This aircraft was built in 1967 as the tactical transport C.1 version but converted to E.3A standard in 1976 for calibration duties, hence the high-vis scheme. Her last flight was in July 94 when she arrived at Cosford for display at the RAF Museum.

The Germans made some extremely innovative and ground-breaking aeroplanes during WWII. The superfast designs have certainly deserved a lot of the limelight and whilst the superslow and nimble Storch doesn't have the glamour of the Schwalbe it fully deserves a place in the German aviation roll of honour!

One of the newest exhibits to join the wonderful RAF Museum at Cosford. Note the 51 Sqn red goose aft of the flightdeck and the RAF Wyton crest on the tail (the port side has the equivalent crest from RAF Waddington). Alas, a museum attendant wouldn't let me move the cones.

This type was developed to familiarise pilots with delta-winged aircraft handling as well as 'fly-by-wire' control systems and contributed, along with the A & B predecessors, greatly to the development of the Vulcan bomber. The 'Flight Test' hangar was my favorite of all the halls at Cosford with many unique and fascinating aircraft.

The Pembroke entered service with the RAF during 1953 replacing the Anson in the light transport and communications role. This particular aircraft served with various comms. squadrons in the RAF from 1956 to 81. Following that she was allocated to 5 Maintenance Unit with the serial 8938M and finally arrived at the RAF Museum during 1987.

In 1955 Auster modified two T.7s, (along with WE563) for use in the Commonwealth Trans-Antartic Expedition, to be known as the Auster Antartic. Alterations included better radio equipment, a larger tail surface, use of floats or skis as required and a bright-orange high-vis scheme. After returning from the expedition this airframe was allocated the non-flying serial 7602M and was delegated to display status paving the way for her eventual arrival at Cosford during 1989.

Ordered as a multi-engine pilot trainer to replace the Varsity, the relationship between the Jetstream and the RAF was rather troubled. This airframe was built in 1970 but didn't enter service until Mar. 77. Shortly after her replacement by the Beech 200 in March '04 she undertook her final flight to Cosford and into retirement.

This enlarged successor to the Lancaster was developed with longer range Pacific sorties in mind but arrived too late to see active service during WWII. This particular aircraft spent most of her service life with various maintenance units before being struck off charge in 1963 and transferred to the RAF Museum in 1968.

In the early 1950 the adoption of a prone pilot was thought to offer the advantages of reduced drag (through elimination of the cockpit bulge) and better resistance to g-force swings when lying flat. In practice the difficulty of operating the controls outweighed these gains, especially after the development of special g-suits, and this plane was never flown solo from the forward, prone position.

Envisioned by Westland as a development of their successful Wapiti, the Wallace was rapidly overtaken by aeronautical progress, eventually only finding a role as a trainer or target tug. This example lay abandoned at Cranwell for thirty years and fell into disrepair. Fortunately, restoration was begun in 1987 and she is now on display at the RAF Museum.
